Suncoast Resort
becomes New Home Depot? Maybe.
In an interview with Tom Kiple,
co owner, of the Suncoast Resort, the
St. Petersburg Times
reports that Home Depot
is asking for a variance in zoning to
build a Home Depot
at the Suncoast Resort location. Tom said
that if Home Depot does purchase the
property he will re-locate the resort. The
first that the merchants and staff heard
of this was in the newspapers. The
merchants and staff only know what was
written in the papers. Many concern
longtime customers, dedicated fans & close
friends have been asking hundreds of
questions. All anybody knows is what we
read in the paper. We do not
know when or if it's
closing. We do not know
were it's moving to. We do not
know when or if it will
re-open. We do not know
how much it sold for. We do
not know, very sadly, how
long our jobs & business will last.
What can you do? First
stop with the millions of questions. You
know just as much as we do and you learned
the news the same time & way that we
did... read it in the papers. Second come
to the resort and spend just $5 in every
store & give your favorite bartenders an
extra $1 tip. A show of appreciation &
concern from our GLBT Family will mean
more than you will ever know.

Iconic gay resort may become a Home
Depot
The Suncoast Resort’s owners say
they’ll reopen elsewhere.

ST. PETERSBURG -- The Suncoast Resort -
for nine years a cultural icon of the
Tampa Bay area's gay community -- may soon
become a Home Depot.
Co-owner Tom Kiple said Friday he has a
tentative sales agreement with the big-box
store. But he said the sale depends upon
the city's approval of two variance
requests, which come before the
Environmental Development Commission next
month.
"This is not a done deal," Kiple said
in his office on the hotel's third floor.
"They have to know whether or not they can
go on this property, and the only way to
know is to go to the city and ask."
Even if the sale goes through, Kiple
said the resort will not close. He said he
has two possible new locations in mind,
but he wouldn't say where.
Kiple would not reveal how much Home
Depot offered for the property, which is
appraised at $4.3 million, according to
county records.
Kiple and his business partner, Lester
Wolff, purchased the destitute 120-room
Hosanna Hotel for $3-million in 1998 with
plans to transform it into the world's
largest gay and lesbian convention center.
Almost immediately, local activists
attacked the new resort, calling it a gay
"invasion."
The controversy helped make the resort
a success, Kiple said. Within weeks, he
said, he was booked solid for months.
Even back then, rumors circulated that
the resort was soon to close.
"There was constantly somebody saying,
'Oh, it's sold, it's sold,'" he said.
Spurred by rumors, retail chains and
developers showed up in his office to make
offers on the 8.97-acre parcel, Kiple
said.
None of the offers were good enough, he
said. Instead, the sprawling pink
stucco-and-concrete complex became a
thriving nightspot, with shops, theme bars
and weekend dance parties.
At least twice, the resort was struck
by tragedy. In August of 2000, a
39-year-old partygoer drowned in the
resort's swimming pool. And in July of
2006, a drunken driver heading home from
the resort struck and killed a 12-year-old
boy.
The resort has also begun to show its
age. Grass has sprouted in the sand of the
volleyball court. Many of the storefronts
on the ground level are empty.
Kiple said he and Wolff kept those
storefronts vacant in anticipation of a
planned renovation. He said they have
already invested in a new roof and updated
wiring and plumbing.
"People say, 'Why don't you fix it up?'
Well, believe it or not we have, but
mostly in things you can't see," he said.
"We were planning on millions of dollars
of renovation, but it's better to
relocate."
First, the city will have to sign off
on two variances: one to let the new Home
Depot keep large mechanical equipment on
the premises, and another to have 233
fewer parking spaces than required by the
City Code.
The Environmental Development
Commission will consider the matter at its
May 2 meeting at 2 p.m. at Council
Chambers in City Hall.
If the deal goes through as planned,
Kiple said it may be three months to a
year before the resort relocates.

News from Leigh Shannon
Hi Guys & Gals,
I am trying to catch up from Vacation and
get back top the real world. MY, oh my
how the world is changing.
Don Imus fired, and no
matter what your opinion is on this, I
respect all of them. But I am troubled
that it seemed to be a slow news week and
this thing got bigger in regard to this
issue. I am also troubled with the two
main characters that got him fired.
Jesse Jackson and
Al Sharpton are kind of crooks
themselves. I don't pay attention to
anyone's skin color in this type of
matter. But I personally thought that Don
Imus getting suspended and losing his
televised version of his radio show was
quite a punishment. And I thought the
ratings would either keep him on the air
or off. My God, Bill O'Rielly
of Fox News as
referred to Mexicans as wetbacks and
eluded to the fact that his hubcaps might
be missing if he park his vehicle in
Detroit? The list goes on with FAR worse
things. The homophobe good looking guy on
The Amazing Race has
called the two gay couples all kinds of
hateful names and they continue to air
them? So if we police, My God the
policing that can be done. I will make it
clear I do not care or approve of Don
IMus's remarks at all. I still just think
the penalty was too great for someone who
actually did show remorse. Rosie
has a NEW feud partner Bill
O'Rielly who has a new
name for himself. Just call him GOD! The
Virginia Massacre is just
so horrible for me to comprehend! But I
say to the news media, move on and please
do not give glorifying credit the horrible
evil man who did this. So a lot of
happenings.
I liked it better when I was at
Dollywood and life was carefree!
LOL!. But honestly it was so nice and
what a great getaway. First up, I notice
how friendly people were and how very FEW
people were waiting around with their cell
phone glued to their ear, The children
were more polite also, people taking my
money thanked me and far more positive
things were apparent there. Then the big
meeting with Miss Dolly Parton
was incredible! We won the first
ride on the brand new Mystery Mine
rollercoaster and got a meet &
greet with a photo. My autographed photo
is on his way to us I hope! :) But this
little lady has done so much for this
state and many cities. She is precious,
beautiful and her personality is such a
strong force! Though she was beautiful,
this ICON is way too thin in my opinion
with her stick arms and legs. Take away
her mucho top and I would say she is NO
bigger than Nicole Richie, honestly! I
know she is a country girl and we need to
get some cornbread in this girl. :) But
still an amazing meet! I am going to post
a full article on my website about my trip
with full PICS and will let you know when
they are up. You may enjoy it for it will
not be all about Dolly but the culture,
location and people as well. And I may
very well get a phone interview still on
her charity The Imaginary Library.
It is a wonderful charity foundation. If
you are a Dolly Parton fan at all, you
need to log on to
http://www.dollymania.net.
This man Duane (Who I
finally got to meet) is a very dedicated
fan of Dolly Parton and gives me great
reads everyday of my life. I appreciate
him so much. Check his site out for sure!
THIS Friday is the beginning of my event,
Brevard's Got Talent at the
Cold Keg in Melbourne.
It is going to be a fun and great event.
The cash and prizes are fantastic and you
can check out the rules, prizes and other
information at
http://www.coldkegnightclub.com
and/or
http://wwwleighshannon.com
. Remember if you have ANY talent, please
come and join in on the fun and
entertainment. Brevard Live
and Florida Today is
going to be there to cover the event. The
judging will consist of judges and the
audience voting from 5 to a high score of
10. They will be combined together and
the top two of each night will win. Then
they will gather with the others at the
final night on May 25th to compete of the
BIG night. Remember celebrity judges will
be there very week and change. And do
remember this is for professionals and
people who think or know they have
talent. And 80s music will be spinning by
local celeb DJ DJSPIN!
And Miss Roz Russell with
be on hand to perform this Friday! Just a
note, we really enjoyed Miss Rozzy
from a couple of Fridays ago.
So come out and play with me one night!
Be sure and look for my new flashes with
Dollywood Photos, my pic with the diva and
a full article on the wonderful trip to
Tennessee!
Remember if we are obsessed with news, the
news will become entertainment and that is
a very scary thing! It will make
celebrities out of people like
Bill O-Rielly. He treats gay
guests (ask Chris Alexander)
on his show terrible.....OH he treats
everyone badly! Just ask Geraldo!
:)
Til Next Time
