The mere mention of the word can either invoke one, or two of the following reactions. One it can be a big turn off to those who can not, or will not accept it. Either these kind of people are fearful of it, or they have become too comfortable enough in believing it will never happen to them. Then there are those who have understood the implications of being too comfortable, or ignored it by either being infected themselves, or unfortunately losing someone they knew and, or loved.   Just the other day I picked up a copy of the local GLBT magazine "The Gazette." On page 6, "638" was the number listed of people here locally from our community who have died not just from AIDS, and HIV but from a variety of causes since 1987.   With all my past case management experience working with local AIDS organizations there is one important lesson in life I have learned. I have learned that we are ALL family, and I have become more of a brother, uncle, and friend than a case manager to those I helped. 25 years later I have lost count of the amount of friends I knew who have died from AIDS.   Ask anyone you know who has lost a friend, lover, family member to this disease and they will tell you its never easy moving on. Sometimes you just cry, and pray that the dull nagging pain will just finally stop once and for all. But then you hear about someone who has died from AIDS, and those feelings just resurfaces again. You ask yourself "Why him, or why her?....It does not make any sense." Truth is AIDS never does make any sense. Its a nightmare that keeps coming back over, and over again. With all the education that is out there, I ask myself again, and again "How many more people have to die from this preventable disease until people wake up and understand?" I hope, and pray everyday that one day there is a cure for AIDS.    I have come to the conclusion that I do not want to lose another friend to AIDS. Life is too precious. Life is too short. The most important thing we can do NOW is embrace life, and never let go. December 1st is the 4Th Annual World AIDS Day. Light a candle for someone you know that has been impacted by AIDS/HIV. Be it for a friend, or relative. At the same time lets remember that life is too important to let something as tragic as AIDS to take away our meaning, and our future. We grew up as kids, went to school together, and finally college. Nine years went by until he called me back in February after he heard that my Father passed away. I am not going in detail with you all on how he contracted it, nor go through memory lane. But I will miss him. He was my best friend, big brother, childhood buddy, and always there for me.
