Mayor Iorio to Open Winter Pride Tampa Bay
County Commissioner Ferlita and City Councilwoman Saul-Sena to attend as well

TAMPA, Fla. – (Monday, February 18, 2008) – Having already declared February 23, 2008 as "Winter Pride Tampa Bay" Day in the City of Tampa, the Honorable Pam Iorio, Mayor of Tampa will be on hand to kick-off the 3rd annual "Pride in the Park" celebration at 11 a.m. at Al Lopez Park.
“Mayor Iorio has long stood for equality and diversity, and we are thrilled she will be able to attend this year," said Brian Feist, co-chair of WPTB. "We invite everyone to come and show their support for Mayor Iorio and thank her for her continued commitment to all families."
During the event’s “Recognizing and Uniting All Families” rally at Noon, Tampa City Councilwoman Linda Saul-Sena and Hillsborough County Commissioner Rose Ferlita will greet the anticipated crowd of 12,000.
“Winter Pride Tampa Bay celebrates all families during our annual "Pride in the Park" and other events,” said Feist.  “Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, Straight, Queer, Questioning and just plain old Friendly people are our "family" and we strive to recognize and unite all families.”
Other speakers include:  Karen Doering, senior counsel for the National Center for Lesbian Rights, Cathy James with Securing our Children’s Rights and Tampa Bay Family Pride, Gene Webster-English with the Suncoast Black Unity Group and Rev. Phyllis Hunt, senior pastor at Metropolitan Community Church of Tampa.
“Winter Pride is ultimately about families, regardless of your family’s make-up,” said Feist.  “This focus on families is what sets Winter Pride apart from other Pride events.”
Emphasizing this focus, Winter Pride’s  Family Fun area has doubled in size and will feature two moon bounces, clowns, face painting, arts and crafts, games and more.  “Pride in the Park” will also include five hours of live entertainment by local bands and performers, more than 120 expo vendors, more than a dozen food concessions and an event-wide ‘beer garden’ serving Miller Lite and Icehouse.
“We invite everyone to come and spend the day with their family and friends in a relaxed and welcoming setting during “Pride in the Park,” said Feist.
“Pride in the Park” is co-sponsored by the City of Tampa.

DRAMATIST GUILD’S TAMPA BAY/CENTRAL FLORIDA TOWN HALL MEETING.

On February 11, 2008, Stageworks, Inc. and the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center hosted a successful Dramatist Guild (DG) Town Hall Meeting in  the Shimberg Playhouse at the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center.  Anna Brennen, Stageworks Producing/Artistic Director, Karla Hartley, the Shimberg Playhouse’s Program Director and Stageworks Board President, Andrea Graham greeted our New York City guests with Cuban sandwiches and freshly baked cookies.

The Meeting was divided in two parts, a membership meeting for area playwrights, many of whom are members of Stagewrights, also sponsored by Stageworks.  Josh Levine, Director of Membership, lead the meeting pointing out the new features in the recently published 2008 Resource Directory and how members could access the many features of the DG web site that is undergoing many improvements to help members get their plays out to theatres.  Madelena Ryerson, Executive Assistant, Creative Affairs, and Andie Arthur, South Florida Regional Rep. joined in the question and answer period.  Among its many perks, DG makes available through its web site taped interviews of some of its more famous members, e.g. Edward Albee, A.R. Gurney, Marsha Norman.

After a break, the second phase of the meeting was lead by Tari Stratton, Director of Education, Events & Outreach, and featured a panel of managers from area theatres.  Anna Brennen represented Stageworks; Bridget Bean represented the Gorilla and Lauren Sasso represented the Asolo.  A lively and candid discussion about new scripts by local playwrights concluded that historically only Stageworks produces one new work every two years.  Gorilla has plans to produce more new work, and Asolo receives new work only through agent submissions.

Under the direction of Gary Garrison, DG Executive Director, Creative Affairs, has championed these Town Hall Meeting in major cities across the country, and had to cancel his trip to Florida at the last minute due to illness.

Gary was missed, but we appreciate the insight of the DG professionals and local theatre managers during this meaningful Town Hall Meeting.    We look forward to many new partnerships and collaborations that evolve out of the acquaintances made on this most successful premiere occasion.

By David Mamet
Directed by Karla Hartley
Feb. 21 – Mar. 9, 2008
Thu. – Sat. 8pm, Sun. 4pm
Tickets: $24.50
Shimberg Playhouse,
TBPAC

Anna and Claire are two bantering, scheming "women of fashion" who have long lived together in a lesbian relationship on the fringes of upper-class society. As the play opens, we see their “Boston marriage” on the edge of disintegration. Anna has just become the mistress of a wealthy man, from whom she has received an enormous emerald and an income to match. Claire, meanwhile, is infatuated with a respectable young lady and wants to enlist the jealous Anna's help for an assignation. As the two women exchange barbs and take turns taunting the Irish maid, Claire's young inamorata appears, setting off a crisis that puts both the emerald and the women's futures at risk. To this wickedly funny comedy, Mamet brings his trademark tart dialogue and impeccable plotting, spiced with Wildean wit.

A “Boston marriage” by definition refers to a romantic friendship during the Victorian era between two unmarried women in long-term union sharing a household. This relationship offered women of a certain class a socially acceptable alternative to traditional marriage. The term “Boston marriage” came to be used after Henry James’ book The Bostonians (1886) which detailed a marriage-like relationship between two women.

Jobsite produced Mamet’s American Buffalo in 2003 to great success.  Mamet is widely-known for the strength of his male roles set in modern, often gritty, contexts and has been often criticized over the years for not writing very strong parts for women.  Boston Marriage in many ways is a response to those criticisms, showing not only he can write for women, but that he can tackle a period piece as well as anyone.

Age recommendation: 16+ Contains adult situations.

Cast & Crew

Jobsite’s production stars Jobsite stalwart and the 2004 Best Actress from the Creative Loafing Reader’s Poll Katrina Stevenson (Gorey Stories, Hurlyburly) as Anna, Emilia Sargent (Jane Eyre - Gorilla Theater, Metamorphoses – American Stage) as Claire, and Alison Burns (Jewtopia; I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change – Jaeb Theater) as the much-abused maid.  Jobsite is excited to welcome the latter two actresses to their stage.

Boston Marriage is directed by Karla Hartley, who directed Jobsite’s acclaimed production of The Goat, or Who is Sylvia?, which Creative Loafing named as the Best Play of 2006. The production features a set design by United Scenic Artists member Scott Cooper, named Best Scenic Designer in 2007 by Creative Loafing, costumes by two-time Best of the Bay Award-winning designer Katrina Stevenson and light design by Karla Hartley.

Check out the Boston Marriage bios for more about the cast and crew.

Season Tickets

Boston Marriage is part of Jobsite's 2007-08 Mainstage Season and is eligible to be part of a Jobsite Season Ticket package. See how you can save up to 20% off tickets to Boston Marriage and other Jobsite productions.
