GaYBOR's got Country, Spur's Country
After a 6 month lapse of not having a steady and a Tampa home for a gay country western bar , Spur's opens in GaYBOR District. The over 400 attendees that gayly opened up the new watering hole were from all over the Tampa Bay area. Owners Kevin, Jeff, and Jim have loved country dancing and so did so many of there line dancing friends and this property and opportunity arose. The bar located on the corner of 8th Ave. and 17th St. ( 1 Block from MC FILM) has a big outdoor courtyard and the building was renovated into the dance floor and bar. It took a lot of work to put together the new club. Demolition, floor sanding, building a new bar, working into the we hours of the night and starting up a whole new venture. The famous country western bar, Wrangler's Bar located on 7th Ave. closed in August of 2007. Spurs will be open Thursday- Sunday with country line dance classes available and a Sunday T-Dance in the afternoons. Congrat's guys and welcome!!

The Old Spurs
Who Remember's It?
Below came from "The Bars That Were" located on our Home Page at www.MCFILMFEST.com
These are the views of the writers & not necessary MC Film

Spurs
A leather bar located in Ybor. To get to the wild second floor you went up the fire escape on the building next door, the walked across the roof to the balcony on front of the building. This club also had a restaurant on the first floor and coffee shop on the side. Later this building burned down. Today the walls are still standing. Tom Lewis name keeps popping up?

Impulse (Same name two different Clubs & owners years apart.)
Originally located on the first floor of "Spurs" in Ybor. Then another Club (not related) , years later, called "Impulse" opened on S. Nebraska Ave. Later became "Tampa Eagle," "Full Moon Salon" and then "Rain."

The Impulse was located on 15th St. Ybor, originally Spurs.  It was owned by Bob Cristaldi, (who also worked at Thompson Realty) owned by Willard Thompson who owned Spurs.     by Thom Lewis

The Eagle Hi Guys!  I wanted to make a few corrections to the Bar List.
"The Eagle" was actually the first Tampa Eagle in the old Spurs building in Ybor.  The downstairs was a dance bar named The Exile, which isn't listed.  Bill Knauf of Tombs & Treasures leased the restaurant, Eagle's Nest and his lover at the time, Richard Shanks, leased a store that sold leather goodies named The Eagle Shop.  He now is the owner of Mr. S Leathers in San Francisco

Ritz Theatre, Back in Style

The Grand re-opening of one of the historic landmarks of Tampa and in Ybor City is the art deco Ritz Theatre on the corner of 7th Ave. & 15th St. (1 Block from MC FILM) Backed with years of  history, the now renovated theatre has had a 3 million dollar face-lift and will be an event/concert facility for private parties or corporate events. The new additions blend well with the original historic structure. With new imported chandeliers installed, the original art deco styled mirrors in the entry renovated, the opulent dance floor with the Ritz Logo in the center, incorporated new modern conveniences, stucco walls and the fabric walls of red velvet wall hangings give one the feeling of reliving the era of the 1920's. Built as a Ritz Theatre in 1917 with the art deco and distinct Latin flavor brick building design, the 1 screen film house closed in the 1970's because of all the multiplexes being built in Tampa. Soon thereafter becoming the Masquerade, a nightclub/concert venue party spot including a gothic club night. This is all happening with a new direction from entertainment district to the new historic landmark renaissance revitalization community in Ybor City. FMI or for a tour contact www.ritzybor.com

Florida Business Interiors opens in Original Ybor Cigar Building
A new "Green Method" interior company expanded into Ybor City. The Florida Business Interior's Company moved into the Ybor City's Ybor Square's 1st floor. The interior business supplier specializes in landmark and historic buildings because it doesn't touch any of the outer walls or is attached to the ceiling or floor. This is great for large build outs in old or new construction. Easy to get to wiring modules under the floors and modular setups ready for a company to downsize or upsize easily and quickly. The Grand Opening Ribbon Cutting Ceremony had in attendance the great grandson of Ybor City cigar factory owner and Ybor City founder Vincente Martinez Ybor, Rafael Martinez-Ybor, Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio, community leaders, and  hundreds of area architects and designers. The new company have many local corporate accounts including Verizon, Outback and Brighthouse Networks

Does USF go forward with Domestic Partner-ship?
from the Tampa Tribune March 31, 2008

Union Pushes USF On Domestic Partner Benefits

By ADAM EMERSON
TAMPA - Even though budget cuts are aimed directly at their colleagues, faculty union leaders at the University of South Florida say they must pursue a benefit still under debate after two years: a domestic-partner health plan. Union leaders say the university's grim financial outlook is no reason to abandon work toward an employee benefit offered at a growing number of Florida schools. Progress, however, remains uncertain. Two years ago, the university's administration agreed to find health care options for gay and unmarried heterosexual couples, a development the union then called a breakthrough. But the university found no health insurer eager to provide coverage, primarily because the pool of employees in which to spread the risk is too small. So this month the union adopted a plan from a study group that was created to find a resolution. The answer: Award domestic partners a stipend to find health insurance on their own. The problem is finding the money. The university can't use state money to contribute its share to the health plan because domestic partners don't meet Florida's definition of "spouse." Although other state universities use endowment money and revenue from concession sales to bankroll domestic-partner benefits, budget cuts have left USF scrounging for cash.

This spectacular Pulitzer-Prize winning comedy is Neil Simon's memoir of his family in 1930's Brooklyn.

Fourteen-year-old Eugene is preoccupied by his passion for the Yankees and his lust for his beautiful cousin, Nora.

Eugene's comic growing pains contrast with the darker issues troubling his family: poverty, illness, long-held sibling resentment and the growing Nazi threat to relatives in Europe.

With a deft and compassionate hand, Simon creates a darkly funny Brooklyn universe full of memorable characters, humor and truth.

Gulfport To Be Festive Focal Point of Dining Out For Life

Tampa Bay, Florida – For the second consecutive year, Gulfport is leading the way in the number of restaurants participating in Dining Out For Life.  14 of 36 participating restaurants in Tampa Bay are located in Gulfport, including a cluster of ten popular restaurants in the waterfront art village.  On Thursday, April 24, 2008, these and other fine restaurants throughout Pinellas County will donate 25% of your bill to AIDS Service Association of Pinellas (ASAP) to benefit families, children and adults living with HIV/AIDS.  It's a unique opportunity to have fun, enjoy a great meal with family and friends, and contribute to a worthy cause.  For more information about participating restaurants, their hours of participation, drawings for great prizes and more, go to www.diningoutforlife.com.

Gulfport's community spirit is shining once again as a leader in restaurant participation in this important event.  To celebrate, ASAP and Gulfport participants will be organizing a number of fun and festive activities in Gulfport's waterfront art village on the evening of April 24th.  Performers from Tampa Bay's American Stage theatre company will be featured on the stage of the Art Village Courtyard performing songs, staged readings and more.  Barefoot Wine and Bubbly will offer a wine tasting tent.  Popular piano man/entertainer Jerry DeMark will be featured at Gulfport's newest restaurant, Domain Food & Spirits.  The Palm Terrace Grill at Peninsula Inn & Spa will also offer live entertainment.  WWBA 1040AM radio personality Tool will be appearing at Backfin Blue Café.  ASAP's own mascot, a larger-than-life pelican named Prevention Pete, will be wandering the streets and dining rooms of Gulfport mingling with diners (a perfect photo op!).  And ASAP's mobile HIV testing unit will be in town, offering HIV testing and prevention information.

Restaurants participating this year range from cafes and diners to pizzerias and white-tablecloth establishments, including some of the finest and most popular restaurants in the area.  Choose from breakfast, lunch, dinner, wine or cocktails, coffee and dessert, or dine out and support the cause all day long!  This year we are proud to partner with these fine restaurants in supporting the work of ASAP:  Ai-Mei Thai, Backfin Blue Café, Basta's, Bella Brava, Blue Heron Café, Brisket Basket, Café Dolce, Café Ten-O-One, Casa Tina, C.D. Roma's, Chiang Mai Thailand, Compass Grille, Dominic's Pizzeria, Elements Global Cuisine, Feola's, Ferg's Sports Bar, Fortunato's, Friendly Fisherman, Georgie's Alibi, Gratzzi, Domain Food & Spirits, Isabelita's, Island Flavors and Tings, Java Nirvana Café, La Cote Basque, La Fogata Churrascaria, Le Bouchon Bistro, Lucky Dill Deli, Mid Peninsula Seafood Market, Palm Terrace Grill, Peg's, Pia's Trattoria, Roman Gardens, Sal's Town Shore, Spoto's Italian Grille, and Water Witch.

Tampa Bay joined the Dining Out For Life family of cities in 2007 with 23 restaurants.  ASAP is proud to have 36 restaurants already on board in only our second year.  Expect even more Tampa Bay restaurants to join with us each year as we expand.  Dining Out For Life represents the largest international fundraising event for HIV/AIDS, involving the participation of over 3,500 restaurants in 47 cities in the U.S. and Canada.  Over $3.5 million was raised last year to support local agencies in participating cities.  The event was originally created in 1991 by ActionAIDS of Philadelphia, and has expanded its reach in each successive year.

In Tampa Bay, Dining Out for Life benefits the clients of AIDS Service Association of Pinellas (ASAP), the largest HIV/AIDS Service Organization in Pinellas County.  ASAP is a division of the Hospice of the Florida Suncoast.  The mission of ASAP is to provide high quality, culturally competent, compassionate services to persons infected or affected by HIV/AIDS by offering a comprehensive continuum of care.  Medical financial assistance, a food and personal needs pantry, monthly dinners for clients and families, and an HIV information center with internet access are among the programs and services provided by ASAP.   Additionally, case management, counseling and support groups, community outreach, an annual "Create Your Sacred Space" retreat, and HIV prevention and testing are all important components of ASAP's services.  To promote HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention, ASAP works closely with diverse aspects of the Tampa Bay Community.  100% of all contributions go to support the work of ASAP.

Subaru is proud to be the host sponsor of Dining Out For Life International.  Tampa Bay sponsors include Hospice of the Florida Suncoast, Barefoot Wine and Bubbly, NewsTalk 1040AM, Gazette, Watermark, The Gabber, American Stage, and Domain: Functional Art For The Home.
