"Ghosts of Ybor: Charlie Wall", Part of Annual HCC Film Festival
First of all a Super Kudos to Hillsborough Community College, Prof. David Audet, Festival Board Members and staff volunteers for a very successful, "6th Annual Ybor Festival of the Moving Image." Over 80 films were shown this year. From shorts to full length documentaries, obscure full length films and creative animation celluloid's. Many of the films producers actors, musicians and directors were present at the showings. This is another credit to the Tampa Bay area for utilizing the think tank of art knowledge to accomplish this annual feet. Thanks So Much for this Appreciative Educational & Entertaining Film Festival.
This is what we went and seen. The unconventional documentary about the major Tampa and Ybor City Crime Mob Leader, Charlie Wall. A celebrity and from well respected icon parents in the area, the directors, the Guzzo Brothers researched and cast a pretty informative picture about "the silent boss of Ybor" and "boleto king" in the 1900's. "The Ghosts of Ybor: Charlie Wall' was shot and produced in Ybor City. A lot of the 40+ cast members were right from Ybor City and Tampa. The chapters of the life of Charlie Wall were informative for those that knew of him and for the new era of newly relocated residents. The film will be in the film festival circuit starting this September and this was a sneek preview to the locals. Ironic was the fact that it was April 19th the day Charlie Wall was murdered in his house by unknown persons that the screening was shown. The packed house applauded the 2 Guzzo Brothers, Paul & Peter, for a most interesting insight into what Tampa has in its lingering past and bringing forth for years to come. Interviews in the film included Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio, retired Tampa detective and numerous others.
With still an inquiry mind from the movie's theme, we set out to get pictures of Ybor's Charlie Walls super secure house that is still in Ybor City. Then onto the gravesite in Oaklawn Cemetery in downtown Tampa where Charlie was buried. Ironic as it seems, there was an elderly Irishman who we saw in the cemetery. We asked him since he was writing down info on a legal pad if he heard of Charlie Wall or if he knew where he was buried .He knew and answered both of our questions. He knew Charlie Wall personally! We saw the Wall family plot and he told us of a story." I didn't remember Charlie drinking so much as other people say." he said, " But I remember when we , the Tampa JC's, flew down to Cuba and Charlie picked up the tab for all the fun we had in Havanna." Further comments he added " You always saw this small framed man wearing his whites. White shirts, white trousers and white hat!" After that he walked away started writing down on his legal pad information from the gravestones.

Oaklawn Cemetery
It's well worth an afternoon to stroll the grounds of Oaklawn Cemetery, located on Morgan Street in downtown Tampa. Oaklawn is full of history, scandals & mysteries. 13 former Tampa Mayors are buried here along with Civil War Heroes & Soldiers. A bomb shell from a Yankee ship actually landed here! You will find the graves of Mr. Vicente Martinez Ybor (founder of Ybor City). Crime boss Charlie Wall is buried next to his father a former Tampa Mayor. Over 120 American Indian remains were relocated to this cemetery when building the convention center in downtown Tampa, Google "Oaklawn Cemetery Tampa" today for more fascinating Tampa History!

City Removes 202 On-street Parking Meters From Ybor
Spaces are converted to free two-hour parking spaces for historic district visitors
Tampa, Fla. (April 21, 2008) - On Wednesday, April 23, 2008 a total of 202 on-street metered
spaces throughout Ybor City will officially become free two-hour parking spaces. The city will
work to install new signage to replace the meters that will indicate the two-hour parking
limitations. The removal of the meters should take approximately three days.
The City of Tampa has been working with the Ybor Chamber, the Ybor City Development
Corporation, residents and members of the Ybor business community to solve parking concerns
in the district. It is anticipated the removal of the on-street parking meters will encourage more
people to visit Ybor City by making the attractions, shops and restaurants more accessible.
The new two-hour parking opportunities are intended for visitors making short visits to Ybor
City. Visitors staying more than two hours are encouraged to utilize the city’s three surface
parking lots or the two parking garages in Ybor. Paying for extended parking at two of the
surface lots has been made easier with the installation of new pay and display machines that
accept coins, bills and soon charge cards. Parking rates at lots and garages are unchanged.
Additionally, the iPark card, which acts as a debit card for parking, is available through the City
of Tampa Parking Division. The iPark card can be used at all City of Tampa surface lots in Ybor
and metered spaces downtown.
For additional information, please contact Parking Manager Jim Corbett at (813) 274-8482 or
Ybor City Development Manager Vince Pardo at (813) 274-7936.
