GBLT History Making Event !!!
Gay American Heroes Display
Makes History at the Florida Capitol's Rotunda
Gay American Heroes Foundation's non-profit organization made state and national history at the Florida Capitol in Tallahassee, Florida. A well received press conference with State Representatives and Senators spoke on behalf of the The 1st GLBT exhibit invited to the Florida Capitol Rotunda. Scott Hall, founder of the Gay American Heroes Foundation, started the beginnings of a traveling memorial exhibit and was welcomed to the Capitol Building during the press conference. It was because of a Polk County gay college student, Ryan Skipper who was brutally murdered, that got Hall interested in a recognition memorial of murdered Gay, Lesbian, and Transgender Youth.
"The murders of gays and lesbian didn't end with Matthew Shepherd in Wyoming. In fact there is a gay person who is murdered in the U.S. every 10 days since the beginning of this year. They were killed just because of their sexual orientation." he went on and said. " I stand next to Ryan Skipper's parents, Lynn and Patricia Mulder, and today ironically is Ryan's birthday (April 28). He was brutally murdered, 1 county over just a year ago. We need to bring attention to this hate blight on the GLBT community, to all America! Happy Birthday Ryan!" Both parents were interviewed by a slew of reporters all about the anti-gay hate crimes. The Mulders have made it there mission to educate about gay hate crimes awareness in high schools, middle schools and PTA's. "A loss like Ryan's... It steals a families life and being," said Patricia Mulder.
A birthday cake was brought out and presented next to the smaller version of the memorial that was displayed. We were glad to be part of Florida's gay history at the Capitol. We both held up signs during the press conference of students that were murdered since March 2008. Tampa Bay's Cate from I'mGay.TV,was one of the TV press reporters covering the event. A very large number of sponsors from the Ft. Lauderdale area were also in attendance. FMI www.GayAmericanHeroes.com

New at Ybor City State Museum
Willy and Carl were visiting the Ybor City State Museum at 1818 9th Avenue, and came across a brand new exhibit called "Sicilians in Tampa, Unfolding the Journey." It answered a lot of questions for them about why the Sicilians came to Ybor City and how they blended in to the cigar rolling industry. Wanting to learn more, they found out that Professor Susan M. Taylor of the Department of Language at the University of Tampa will be giving a talk on "The Survival of the Sicilian Dialect of Tampa, Florida" on Sunday, May 4th, at two p.m. at the Italian Club, located at 1731 E. 7th Avenue. What more could you ask for?
Thanks, Willy

WMNF 88.5 Community Radio announces an exciting new venture: The WMNF Film Series which is organized and directed by the WMNF Film Committee, established in February of this year. The mission of The WMNF Film Series is to: "Enhance the mission of WMNF Community Radio through the presentation of films that inform, educate and entertain the public, and engage the Tampa Bay community in dialogue over politically and culturally charged issues of our times."
Our first film, In Sickness and In Health, is a timely documentary that initially follows seven gay couples in the state of New Jersey who filed lawsuits with the hopes of legalizing same-sex marriage. And redirects it's focus to one couple, raising 5 children, who find out during the filming of the documentary that one parent has ALS, or Lou Gehrig's disease. It is a witty and touching film that you shouldn't miss.
The proposed constitutional amendment, The Marriage Protection Amendment, which defines marriage between a man and woman exclusively, will be on the Florida ballot in the upcoming November elections. This movie brings to light the discrimination same-sex couples face every day in the courts, hospitals and from society as a whole. The WMNF Film Series will hold a riveting panel discussing following the movie. To date we have Rebecca Steele of he ACLU, Nadine Smith of Equality Florida, Mark Tishman of MetLife. Rob Lorei, WMNF News Director will moderate.
The movie will have a one-night-only showing on Wednesday, May 7, 8:30pm at The Beach Theatre, 315 Corey Ave., St. Petersburg Beach. Tickets are $8 advance and $10 at the door. Please call the theater to get your tickets. (727) 360-6697 or go to www.beachtheatre.com <http://www.beachtheatre.com/>
