A full list of business challenges, opportunities and activities in the GaYBOR District in historic Ybor City was presented to her. Other big topics brought up were the new & old "Gayborhoods " in cities across the state & country and the need for such districts.. Carrie West, president welcomed and introduced the Mayor to the coalition members.Ybor City Historic Civic Assoc. President Tony LaColla informed everyone about the different abilities city political leaders can offer to a gay neighborhood district. "Tampa Bay is unique in that no other GLBT district in other cities has grown so quick & fast." Tony commented. The GaYBOR District Coalition has in 1 year has105 members in the organization. D. Stephen Moss, coalition VP brought forth the beginnings of GaYBOR and to what has happened and the positive direction which the GaYBOR District is heading.

Thursdays in GaYBOR
The new Thursdays nights in GaYBOR are the talk of the bay area! This past Thursday at Gaspar's Grotto, The Ybor Art Colony & Bad Kitty Productions hosted "The Adult Carnival - No Kiddie Rides Tour" under the direction of Eva David ( get on her invitation list at bitchkitty65@yahoo.com).  There was food, an art show, kill the keg, wine tasting, fun games & live bands. We definitely became fans of the group "Taint" from Dunedin. Loved the base fiddle player!!!! Over at Streetcar Charlie's they are into the 3rd week of "GaYBOR Karaoke Idol Contest."  It was standing room only with guest Judge Albert! The Ritz Ybor have started a very fun Thursday Night party. Featuring Art - Fashion - Performance. There  was a impressive art show, musicians in zute suits and even LIVE Window Mannequins! We can't wait to see what happen's this Thursday! At Lounge 714 every Thursday at 7pm starts the "Judy B. Goode & Paul Thomas Show" this high camp show has quite the loyal following. At 10 PM Miss Melanie Minyon starts the bay area's amateur strip.  Toss in Great Shopping, Great Food, Great Club Special and it's easy to see why Thursdays in GaYBOR  are not pa set.

The George Michael's Concert
When we stepped onto the streetcar in GaYBOR & it was full of gay bois and we knew this was going to be a great concert! Once inside the St. Pete Times Forum looked like the biggest Gay Bar in the state! Seated next to us was the whole staff of Watermark Magazine! Our hosts were Bill & Tania Ames of the Mix 100.7 radio.Talk about great seats, we were on the lower level directly across from the stage. Working on "Drag Time", just 45 minutes late, handsome-esk George Michael took the stage. The backdrop of the stage was a huge 125' X 50" HDT Screen that went down to the stage then across the floor and down the stage into the audience! It was as if he was performing in a MTV Videos! The high energy show wowed everybody for almost 2 hours with his greatest hits of now & yesteryear. At one point all six rainbow colors were used in the backdrop. Unfortunately they were not in the correct order. After the concert it was back on the trolley, this time standing room only for the short ride back to GaYBOR. Later that night in GaYBOR was Bravo TV's health and exercise guru Jackie Warner at Tease, Hot dancers at G. Bar, Cowboys dancing at Spurs, the blackout dungeon dance at Lounge 714 & a wonderful show at Pure Nightclub.

Hamburger Mary's Orlando
Now open in Orlando, Hamburger Mary's, what a great excuse for a ROAD TRIP!  We called our friend Cowboy Roger then grabbed a stack of GaYBOR maps & tbt Magazine (with Cowboy Roger on the cover) & were off to Orlando. Located in Church Street Station in part of the former Cheyenne Club. It is just 50 ft from the front door of the new residential high rise "55 W." Entering Hamburger Mary's you are greeted by a statue of Mary herself!   We then had the pleasure of meeting Co-Owner Michael Carpenter. After sitting down the first thing we noticed was the extensive  Rainbow Drink Menu! With drinks like "Mary's Cherry Popped" & "Don't Shoot Me in the Eye!" We couldn't resist the margaritas! Rainbow Dip & Mary-Mac & cheese balls for appetizers. Main course of pulled pork with a sweet Guinnis sauce, the famous meat loaf & hamburger of course!  Our server Ed couldn't have been nicer & more helpful. When a local has pride in his community it really shows! Our favorite of the whole meal was the specialty potato salad! It was like a loaded baked potato. On the way out we ran into Orlando friends  & couldn't help but notice Tampa's Sax player, Alan Darcy was performing here soon. Then it was on the Orlando's most famous GLBT tourist attraction... NO not the Parliament House (but your are so very close) bartenderess Miss Vicky! For over 30 years, everybody's favorite girlfriend & icon bartender extraordinare at P House! Her wit & charm are incredible. Just how does she remember everybody's name & drink???? Just when you think the party couldn't get any better in walks Peter & Frank form What's Happening Magazine! We all are so very lucky to have these guys & their magazine as a vibrant part of Central Florida's GLBT Community!  I'm not one to gossip but.... out of the corner of my eye we notice Cowboy Roger was turning his famous charm on P-House co owner Susan! Hum... we understand that the Florida Maverick Dance Team will be performing there soon! Go Roger!!! A big Thank You to Michael, Ed, Miss Vicky, Peter, Frank & Susan for a great Monday road trip!

Dear Friend of TBBC:
This email is a reminder that we will continue our Summer Recess Socials at The Forge in Ybor City, Tampa through September.   Socials are on the second Saturday of the month starting around 9:00 pm.   Next get together is Saturday, August 9th.   This is their "Gear Night".  So, wear one piece of leather (one piece is sufficient I'm told) or gear (kink, fetish or sports).   If not, you will have to take off your shirt.   You also need to wear some sort of boots according to their guidelines.   Hope to see you at The Forge unless you have fled Florida for the summer.

Also, you can check out=2 0our club website for information regarding the club: tampabaybondageclub.info.

We continue to try to up date our email list.   If you no longer wish to receive emails from TBBC, please let me know and I will delete you from our list.   Thanks.

Strange Letter
Is it a antique or just strange?
Sisters.
John had taken a big old boom box that plays 8 tracks. it is mine and I have been saying it because I have old 8 tracks to play. John was at my door this morning and said the boom box was over at your apartments. Please get and place it where he cannot get his hands on it. Because with him I may never see it again and you know it is almost impossible to get an 8 track player.
Thanks
Rex

Greetings GaYbor Friends...

We got wonderful news today from the Tampa Bay Business Journal.  They have named the Clip Film Festival (Tampa International Gay and Lesbian Film Festival) as the 25th largest event in Tampa Bay!  Not just GLBT events, but of ALL events hosted in Tampa.  Also in the top 25 were great events like Gasparilla, St Pete Pride, the MacDill Air Fest, and the annual Florida Strawberry Festival.  This is a great day for our community.  Other than the Sarasota Film Festival, no other film festivals placed higher than Clip!  There are other film festivals in Tampa, but none with the history, and sense of total community that the Clip Film Festival brings to Tampa.  This is also a great day for GLBT events, having two of our events named to the top 25 list. (St Pete Pride was 8th!!!)

As I said to one of the St Pete Pride organizers at the conclusion of their event... "Tag...I'm it!"   Clip 19 (the 19th annual Tampa International Gay and Lesbian Film Festival) is just about 60 days away.  All indications are that this year will be a wonderful continuation of the great strides we made in 2007.

Clip 19 (The 19th annual Tampa International Gay and Lesbian Film Festival)
October 2-12, 2008

Because this year's event is earlier in October, our program guide will go to print in the middle of August.  That may seem like a long time from now, but it is only three weeks away.   The books are made available to the public a month prior to the festival.  We want you to (as always) give the film festival every consideration with your advertising and sponsorship support.

Keep in mind, that unlike most events, Friends of the Festival is a year-round organization.  The Clip Film Festival, the hallmark of our calendar is an 11-day event, hosted in both Tampa and St Petersburg.  The Clip Film Series also runs on both sides of the bay and includes monthly programming from January through August.  The Clip Film Outreach Program offers free public screenings all year long!  Our website is continually getting increased traffic, with the highest peak in August, September and October.  NEW events added this year (Clip@GayDayS Film Fest) expanded our regional footprint even farther.

I want you to go to our website... download the advertising materials and get yours in today!    I want you make a commitment to support the Clip Film Festival (Tampa International Gay and Lesbian Film Festival) because we have made a commitment to Ybor City.  (Ads must be turned in before August 8th)  As a bonus, we can begin your benefits right now, with our August Clip Film Series Screenings.

I am available to you anytime.

All the best,

PS... This just in.... Bruce Vilanch will be at Opening Night!!!

Sick patients, dams, and flooding -- oh my

Picture 9-93Brad Dacus of the anti-gay Pacific Justice Institute will now put the California/Massachusetts marriage sitiuations in perspective for us all:

"Massachusetts becomes the 'sicker patient in the hospital,' by far, if we in California are successful in amending our state constitution as, once again, between one man and one woman," ... "Massachusetts will then be the place, instead of California, where homosexual couples fly to...get married....[That's just a major leak in the dam that's got to be patched up...if we're going to keep a major flooding of the homosexual agenda from being poured out on all the states across the country"

In the past eight years, she's successfully launched four national tours, turning each into a concert film. In 1999, her groundbreaking one-woman show, I'm The One That I Want , became a best selling book and a concert film that grossed more per print than any film in history. Her following tour, Notorious C.H.O., culminated in a sold-out show at Carnegie Hall, and in 2004, the CD of her Revolution tour was nominated for a Grammy®.

A true entertainment pioneer, Cho also created and starred in The Sensuous Woman, a live variety show featuring vaudevillian burlesque and comedy, which she took for a successful off-Broadway run last fall.

Larry Townsend
I  am sad to announce that Larry Townsend, gay leather activist and author, passed away at the age of 77. He wrote "The Leatherman's Handbook" (1972), the classic primer on kinky gay sex, as well as a score of gay leather novels and a leather advice column.  Mr. Townsend's long-time friend, author Jack Fritscher, wrote this obituary:

Larry Townsend
"Legendary"
27 October 1930 - 29 July 2008

Spill a drop for lost brothers.

Larry Townsend was the pseudonymous author of dozens of books including Run Little Leather Boy (1970) and The Leatherman's Handbook (1972) at pioneer erotic presses such as Greenleaf Classics and the Other Traveler imprint of Olympia Press. Growing up as a teenager of Swiss-German extraction in Los Angeles a few houses from Noel Coward and Irene Dunne, he ate cookies with his neighbor Laura Hope Crews who was Aunt Pittypat in Gone with the Wind.

He attended the prestigious Peddie School, and was stationed as Staff Sergeant in charge of NCOIC Operations of Air Intelligence Squadrons for nearly five years with the US Air Force in Germany (1950-1954). Completing his tour of duty, he entered into the 1950s underground of the LA leather scene where he and Montgomery Clift shared a lover. With his degree in industrial psychology from UCLA (1957), he worked in the private sector and as a probation officer with the Forestry Service. He began his pioneering activism in the politics of gay liberation in the early 1960s.

In 1972, as president of the "Homophile Effort for Legal Protection" which had been founded in 1969 to defend gays during and after arrests, he led a group in founding the H.E.L.P. Newsletter, the forebear of Drummer (1975). As a writer and photographer, he was an essential eyewitness of the drama and salon around Drummer in which his novels were often excerpted. His signature "Leather Notebook" column appeared in Drummer for twelve years beginning in 1980, and continued in Honcho to Spring 2008. His last novel, TimeMasters, was published April 2008; his last writing was an introduction to Gay San Francisco: Eyewitness Drummer (June 2008). The world famous "Million Dollar Pier", on the downtown St. Petersburg waterfront, lived up to its legacy when it opened in 1926. The Million Dollar Pier was dedicated on Thanksgiving Day in 1926, with ceremonies attended by more than 10,000 people. The Mediterranean-revival casino style building featured a central atrium, an open-air ballroom with terrazzo floors on the rooftop and an observation deck costing $998,279.18.

After 40 years as a hallmark of the city's waterfront, the building, falling to deterioration, was demolished to make way for a new St. Petersburg icon.

In January 1973, the City of St. Petersburg introduced the inverted pyramid pier that stands today. Continuing its legacy as a centerpiece of St. Petersburg's downtown waterfront, The Pier features five stories of shopping, dining and adventure. Visitors can find 16 specialty shops, galleries and boutiques, four sit-down waterfront restaurants, the Dockside Eatery food court, The Pier Aquarium, and a variety of outdoor water and land adventures to enjoy – including a dolphin sightseeing tour, electric boats for rent, charter sailboat excursions and 2-4-6-seater bicycles to pedal around downtown.

For all its great new features, The Pier still offers the charms of yesteryear, playing host to fishermen, dancers, and stargazing guests. The Pier is open 365 days a year, rain or shine, and holds over 300 free events annually, including dances for seniors, weekly live performances in the Sunday afternoon Music Fest on the Water, weekend family activities and BIG celebrations for July 4th and New Year's Eve!

SOME REAL BASIC/SIMPLE ADVISE ...

1. Do not walk behind me, for I may not lead.  Do not walk ahead of me, for I may not follow.  Do not walk beside me either.  Just pretty much leave me alone.
2. The journey of a thousand miles begins with a broken fan belt and a leaky tire.
3. It's always darkest before dawn. So if you're going to steal your neighbor's newspaper, that's the time to do it.
4. Don't be irreplaceable.  If you can't be replaced, you can't be promoted.
6. Always remember that you're unique ... just like everyone else.
7. Never test the depth of the water with both feet.
8. If you think nobody cares if you're alive, try missing a couple of car payments.
9. Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you criticize them, you're a mile ---away and you have their shoes.
10. If at first you don't succeed, skydiving probably is not for you.
11. Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day.  Teach him how to fish and he'll sit in a boat and drink beer all day.
12. If you lend someone $20 and never see that person again, it was probably worth it.
13. If you tell the truth, you don't have to remember anything.
14. Some days you're the windshield ... some days you're the bug.
15. Don't worry ... "it" only seems kinky the first time.
16. Good judgment comes from bad experience, and a lot of that comes from bad judgment.
17. The quickest way to double your money is to fold it in half and put it back in your pocket.
18. A closed mouth gathers no foot.
19. Duct tape is like the Force.  It has a light side and a dark side, and it holds the universe together.
20. There are two theories to arguing with women.  Neither one works.
21. Generally speaking, you aren't learning much when your lips are moving.
22. Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.
23. Never miss a good chance to shut up.
24. We are born naked, wet and hungry, and get slapped on the behind. Then things get worse.
25. Never, under any circumstances, take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night.
26. There is a fine line between "hobby" and "mental illness."
27. No matter what happens, somebody will find a way to take it too seriously.
28. There comes a time when you should stop expecting other people to make a big deal about your birthday ... around -----age 11.
29. Everyone seems normal until you get to know them.
