But it doesn't start and end with the presidency. You can make sure a President Obama has the strong allies and leaders he needs in Congress when you support these courageous pro-equality candidates:

  • Congressman Mark Udall, who has earned a 100% on HRC's scorecard and whose opponent for the U.S. Senate, former Rep. Bob Shaffer, earned flat 0% ratings in Congress;
  • New Hampshire's former Governor Jeanne Shaheen, who signed a repeal of the state's ban on gay adoption, enacted a law to ban workplace discrimination, and supports her state's new civil union law;
  • Representative Gabrielle Giffords, who has clearly and publicly opposed Arizona's discriminatory marriage ballot measures, in 2006 and again this year. She faces a tough reelection campaign against the state senator who cast the final and deciding vote that put the marriage amendment on the ballot this year;
  • Iraq War veteran and "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" opponent Ashwin Madia, who is running for a hotly contested seat in the battleground state of Minnesota;
  • Comedian, writer, radio talk show host, and outspoken supporter of the GLBT community, Al Franken, who will be running against the Minnesota incumbent, Senator Norm Coleman;
  • Mark Begich, who is running against the corruption-mired Alaskan Senator Ted Stevens. The race is an opportunity to replace a senator who's repeatedly cast votes against the GLBT community--voting for the Federal Marriage Amendment and against the Matthew Shepard Act--with a true GLBT advocate;
  • Congressman Tom Udall, who supports key HRC legislation such as the fully-inclusive Employment Non-Discrimination Act and strong hate crimes prevention legislation, and will be running for the open Senate seat in the battleground state of New Mexico.

Florida's Karaoke Talent Quest Finals 

Over 250 participated this past weekend in hopes of singing there way to the big show in Las Vegas. The Ritz in Ybor had talents from country, classic,modern, pop and blues. Promoter and Watermark Magazine writer, Steve Blanchard and partner Bill were kept very busy for the 4 day finals. The audience was often mesmerized as were the judges which included clip Film Festival Exec. Director Chuck Henson, local singing artist, Judy B. Goode, plus dozens of others.

Ban on Gay Adoption cleared for Arkansas ballot

A ballot initiative aimed at effectively banning gays and lesbians from becoming foster or adoptive parents was cleared to appear on this fall’s ballot in Arkansas. The measure “would prohibit unmarried couples living together from fostering or adopting children.” Republican Presidential Candidate Sen. John McCain has caved to the right wing conservatives on this particular issue, recently stating that he doesn’t believe in gay adoption. “I am for the values that two parent families  the traditional family represents,” McCain said recently, presumably indicating his support for the Arkansas initiative. So guess what comes next? Initiatives to ban gay foster homes in Florida and California are now in the ranks of the American Family Coalition! From Arkansas Foster Family Services,  requirements to be foster parents. "      Foster parenting is a serious commitment. It requires giving the gift of unconditional love to children and youth who may never have experienced love of any kind and who may not know how to accept it." www.fosterarkansas.org

I read your comments about the state of news coverage of the Tampa Bay GLBT community and you make some valid points. Quite frankly, I think your column is the most informative source of information on our community.
It is a shame that so many gay rags have come and gone, but I think it is a case of trying to do too much.
There is a limited amount of advertising dollars, a small and ever-changing audience, and relatively little demand for anything other than what is happening at the local bars. I applaud the Watermark for their efforts, but have to wonder how long they can sustain in today's economy.
Yours is always fresh, up to date, and accurate. I applaud your dedication and your tireless devotion to the community.
Please keep up the good work, and know that you have my support.
