Hurricane Katrina Three Year Anniversary
Today is Aug. 29, 2008 the three year anniversary of the day Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans. I think that will be one of those days/moments that everybody will remember where we were the rest of our lives. We were at our store , MC Film Festival,  at the Suncoast Resort. It was a very surreal moment. Outside in the courtyard was a T-dance with 1000's of people dancing & partying. Inside our store a group of teary eyed people, had formed around the TV's as we all couldn't believe what was happening. No way out!!! 1,000's of people were being told it's too late to get out of the way. Your last chance to survive is to go to the Louisiana Superdome. We all know the rest of the story. At least 1,836 Americans died that night. In the day's that followed the unprepared government response, under the leadership of the Bush administration this was appalling, shocking, embarrassing & totally unacceptable!!! People had to take charge with their own hands. So here we are three years later and Hurricane Gustaf is churning in the gulf with his eyes set on Louisiana. A close friend of ours shared that he was suffering from "Katrina Post Trauma Stress." Just the thought of a Hurricane opened a flood gate of emotions including fear, panic, shock. Not just about the Hurricane but also what will be the government response. We think as Floridians, we all have a little of both these fears.
 
Follow up wrote on 9-2-08 The evacuation went much better. Especially the care for people who didn't have the means to leave on their own. Also the evacuation of pets was great! How many people stayed behind before, understandably, was because of their pets. On a very strange note. Why was it Breaking News at 11:30am during the storm about McCain's running mate, Gov.Palin's 17 year old daughter was pregnant?

Labor Day Weekend in GaYBOR
What a Crazy & Fun Weekend in GaYBOR!!! The Hotels & Restaurants were all packed. It was the last weekend for the play put on by M.A.D. Theatre Group "The Full Monty' & opening weekend for the Oscar Wilde romp of "Gross Indecency" which marks the return of Dir. Trevor Keller's theatre group Gypsy Productions, Inc. All the clubs were filled with eclectic energy! On Labor Day Sunday there were actually 6 T-Dances!!!! Spurs, Castle, Streetcar Charlie's, The Ritz Ybor, Czar's & G.Bar. Our best pick of the weekend went to G.Bar and their "Trailer Park Party". Club designer Mathieu Stanoch really out did himself this time! As you entered the club the 1st thing you noticed was the clothes lines full of laundry hanging in a zig zag pattern with Christmas lights covered with Pabst Blue Ribbon  (PBR) beer cans.  A picnic area set up, with old tires, Christmas tree, pink flamingo lawn ornaments & broken TV sets! In the dance room Mathieu had used laundry baskets for lamps shades, a 6' picket fence surrounded the DJ booth. The best part.... was pair of rusty washer & dryer!!!! The Staff, Sheriff & Possy, MC Film & Friends all dressed for the part too! Even Steve & Stephen were sporting sexy outfits!!!!

A benefit for the AIDS Walk St. Petersburg was hosted by the Tampa Bay Bears at St. Pete's new hot spot, Partner's Sports Cafe.
