The very popular 12 week event "GaYBOR Karaoke Idols Contest" at Streetcar Charlie's hosted the finals. The contestants were; Dennise Fletcher, Mikee Brean, Delish Ronnie, Yarrick Conner, Angel Nazro, Beali Cutner, Mellias Rugly, Eric, Mike Jek, Tammy Hutto, Ken Schele, Carlos Lopez & JT. If it was only up to us we would have given everybody 1st place! The winners were in 5th Place Angel Nazro, in 4th Place was Yarrick Conner, in 3rd Place was Eric, in 2nd place was JT and
 the winner was TAMMY HUTTO!

National Coming Out Day in GaYBOR
What a day & night in GaYBOR! In the afternoon there were 5 cent trolley car rides, 3 festivals and a police run! That night GaYBOR rolled out the Red Carpet for the clip Film Festival attendees, drawing a record number crowd for clip. There were parties all over Ybor City and at Streetcar Charlie's, Spurs, Volcano Party  at G.Bar ( more below), Gallery Live & even MC Film. The men's party called "The Surge" was held at Czar's while the womyn's party, "Sugar" was at The Honey Pot. WE actually experienced a first at The Sugar Party! There was a huge 5' block of ice with pink lingerie panties & bra frozen in it. The ladies actually  poured pomrangranet vodka thru the frozen panties! Whew, what a chiller!! Toss in 2 chocolate fountains, turning 4 tiers of eclairs & cheese cake, women's Turkish Hot Oil Wrestling, more drink samples. The Sugar Party receives 5 stars from us!!!!

Just where did they find all those virgins? The volcano erupted on stage and flowed over into the dance floor! Ybor City's 7th Avenue to be Honored as One of Nation's Best Streets
American Planning Association Recognizes Excellence Across the Country

Tampa, FL (Oct. 8, 2008) - The American Planning Association (APA)announced today that 7th Avenue will be recognized as one of the 10Great Streets in America for 2008 through APA's Great Places in America program. APA has singled out 7th Avenue as a Great Street in America for its history, distinctive character, and strong community engagement.
APA great Places offer better choices for where and how people work and live.  They are enjoyable, safe, and desirable.  They are places where people want to be - not only to visit, but also to live and work. America's great streets are defined by many criteria, including architectural features, accessibility, functionality, and community involvement.  Through Great Places in America, APA recognizes unique and authentic characteristics found in three essential components of all communities - streets, neighborhoods, and public spaces.

"We are excited to select 7th Avenue as one of this year's great streets," said APA Executive Director Paul Farmer, FAICP. "Historically, this street served as a melting pot of cultures. Desegregation was the practice here long before the 1964 Civil Rights Act was passed." He said.  "The unique architecture of the buildings fronting the street, and the community involvement that went into protecting this legacy shows what can be done when citizens, businesses, and government work together."

APA President and Planning Commission Executive Director, Robert B. Hunter, FAICP said, "This award is given to only a small number of communities after a rigorous application and review process." Hunter went on to say, "Ybor City is an important part of Tampa's history. This designation will further emphasize how important it is to preserve our past. This is a very prestigious award and Tampa should be proud!"

The designation encompasses 11 blocks between 26th Street to the east and Nick Nuccio Parkway to the west.  Seventh Avenue's origins date to 1885 when Ybor City was known as the cigar manufacturing capital of the world, a reference that remained accurate through the late 1950's.  More than 230 factories were located in and around Ybor City, and at the heart of it all was 7th Avenue. 

Spanish, Cuban, African, German, Jewish and other immigrants arrived at the end of the 19th Century and beginning of 20th Century creating strong social networks and clubs along the street.  Seventh Avenue and its colorful heritage were almost destroyed in the late 1950's and 1960's when 93 percent of Ybor City was bulldozed because of federal
urban renewal efforts and interstate freeway construction.  The community fought proposals that would have caused all of the original buildings to be leveled.  In 1959 the Barrio Latino Commission (BLC) - Tampa's first architectural review commission --  was created in order to protect the buildings and neighborhoods that remained.

The area's tradition of civic participation and community involvement in planning and preservation has continued.  The Ybor City Historic District Revitalization Plan, developed in 1983, led to millions of dollars in private investment along 7th Avenue.

Great Places in America is APA's flagship program celebrating places of exemplary character, quality, and planning. They represent the gold standard in terms of cultural and historical interest, community involvement, and a sustainable vision for the future.

A small celebration is being planned to recognize the designation.

     This series of comedic monologues, which the New York Times called "Glorious," chronicles the lives of various Latino immigrants dealing with transcultural shock of race and gender identity known as the "Hispanic breakdown". MEN ON THE VERGE OF A HIS-PANIC BREAKDOWN will OPEN at The Ritz Ybor Friday October 17, 2008. Following the opening night performance will be a Champagne Reception.

 

      Men On The Verge of a His-panic Breakdown will run through Sunday November 2, 2008 with the following performances. Opening Night , Friday October 17, 8:00 P.M. at The Ritz Ybor, Saturday October 18, 8:00 P.M. Dinner Theater at Street Car Charlie’s, Sunday October 19, 7:00 P.M. at The Ritz Ybor, Wednesday October 22, 8:00 P.M., 2-4-1 at The Ritz Ybor, Friday October 24, 8:00 P.M. at The Ritz Ybor, Sunday October 26, 7:00 P.M. at The Ritz Ybor, , Wednesday October 29, 8:00 P.M., 2-4-1 at The Ritz Ybor, Friday October 31, 8:00 P.M. at The Ritz Ybor and Saturday and Sunday November 1 & 2 Brunch Theater at Street Car Charlie’s at 2:00 P.M.

(Meal service for all Street Car Charlie's performances will begin 1 hour prior to show time.)

                  

      MEN ON THE VERGE OF A HIS-PANIC BREAKDOWN  follows seven gay Hispanic immigrants as they seek their slice of the American pie. The production will star Carlos Milan in all seven Roles.

 

      The play is bracketed by the misadventures of the naive Frederico or "The Gay Little Immigrant That Could" who arrives in Los Angeles during the first day of the 1992 riots and believes he's witnessing the filming of another Lethal Weapon sequel and mistakes the looting for U.S. generosity. As a playwright, Reyes certainly has a taste for irony.  “As one sign of the playwright’s inventiveness, the character of Federico falls in love with not exactly your ordinary person,”… “He falls for a deaf Barbra Streisand impersonator.”

 

      Other characters include Vinnie, a kept boy being asked to leave the home of his wealthy sugar daddy because he's turned 30, who is being replaced by an 18-year-old from Wichita . ; But perhaps the most tragically comic character is aspiring actor Eduardo Troncos. Eduardo bleaches his skin, goes to trendy straight bars, and changes his name to Edward Thornhill III. Edward, a Latino actor passing for Anglo who gets a Latino part and has to deal with his real identity; But the producers tell him he is not Spanish enough. When he suggests he use the name Eduardo Troncos, they tell him the name is not Spanish enough either; the Demon Roommate, a lonely young man with an apartment a little too close to the airport; Paco, a Cuban restauranteur who was imprisoned by the Communists in Cuba for being gay and has now been exiled by his right-wing Miami family for the same reason; the Teacher, a stuffy, sexually repressed English-language instructor who abuses his Latino students when they can't learn properly the "language of Princess Di", marries a congressman’s daughter for convenience, only to fall in love with one of his male students; and La Gitana, a drag Flamenco dancer struggling with AIDS as he stages his final performance.

 

     The play ends with Federico's final misadventure as he tells of his newly found romance, a better job and his acquisition of citizenship in a grand, positive finale. "Some of the characters seem to be hanging onto their American existence by a thread, but make no mistake; these are tough, tenacious men."

 

Theatre tickets are $25.00 for The Ritz Ybor performances and $45.00 for the Street Car Charlie’s performances. Wednesday 2-4-1 tickets are not ½ price but truly 2-4-1. Group rates are available. Street Car Charlie’s will be providing a special His-panic Breakdown Menu and reservations for dinner may be made at the time of ticket reservations.
