VOTE EARLY
The 2008 Elections
The election debates in our store this year have been excellent, intense, and sometimes just plain mean! We will never understand GLBT republicans. As our good friend Christine O'Leary said "Being gay & being a republican is like being a chicken and voting for Perdue Farms!" Even more upsetting this year are the people who say the GLBT issues have no affect on them. This reminds us of an old story "Why you should never tell a GLBT joke". If 10% of the world is GLBT and we know it's really much higher. Would you agree that 5% is? Would you agree that all GLBT people have a Mother & Father? Add 10%. Would you agree most have 1 brother or sister? Add 5% Would you agree most have a Grandmother & Grandfather? Add 10% Would you agree most have an 1 Uncle & 1 Aunt? Add 10% Would you agree most have 2 cousins? Add 10% Would you agree most have at least 2 straight friends? Add 10% Would you agree most have at least 2 friends at work or school? Add 10% Would you agree that most have at least 2 good causal acquaintances? Add 10% Now let's do the math. If you agree with everything up top.... 80% of Americans know a GLBT person who is related to them or is their close friend. That our friends is why the GLBT issues are so very important to Americans and that is why we are voting Democrat! We are very lucky to live in the great country with a two party system, where our differences can be made so very clearly.

Teatro On 7th Opens with Fanfare
Just opening it's doors to Ybor City is
Teatro on 7th, a new Mediterranean themed restaurant. It has taken over the former
Big City Tavern location in the historic
El Centro Espanol Building on the 2nd floor in Centro Ybor. Owner/ chefs
Bill Haines and business partner
Philip Zeltsar had quite the audience.
Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio was one of the many ribbon cutters as was Centro owner
David Harvey. The 1892 built building was the centerpiece for entertainment with socials, theatre performances, Cuban restaurant and the community center of Ybor City life. Now it comes around to a new unique historical setting.
"Teatro means theatre in Spanish and so it is renewed again." owner Bill said. A full house of invited guests were delighted to the additions to Ybor City's Spanish
Columbia Restaurant, Greek themed
Acropolis, and Italian fare
Bernini's. On the creative menu by the chef duo are such delights as Poached Lobster Salad, Braised Lamb osso bucco, Lemongrass Skewered Shrimp, and Classic Meatloaf with garlic mashed potatoes. Great drinks, Appetizers, featured sandwiches, daily entree specials and deserts are also available in this treasured and authentic Ybor landmark. The bigness, the beauty, the history and the food will bring you to Teatro's on 7th. Congratulations and welcome to the GaYBOR District. FMI

We are committed to downtown Tampa and look forward to celebrating the Clip Film Festival's 20th anniversary in the beautiful Tampa Theatre next October."

In Memoriam: Del Martin
1921-2008

Del Martin, 1982
Photographer unknown. Photo courtesy of Phyllis Lyon.
October 1, 2008, we celebrated our founding mother and dear friend, Del Martin.
Del touched many lives with her incomparable passion and dedication, and the modern LGBT civil rights movement would not be the same if it weren't for her relentless pursuit of justice. Her work with Phyllis Lyon, her partner in every respect, changed the way the world viewed the LGBT community, and their legacy will, no doubt, resonate for decades to come.
On June 16, 2008, Del Martin and Phyllis Lyon were married after 55 years together. They were the first couple to wed since the California Supreme Court ruled in May that it was unconstitutional for the state to deny the right to marry for same-sex couples.
Sadly, only six weeks after they were finally able to get married, Del passed away.
Last week, GroundSpark released exclusive footage of Phyllis and Del's historic wedding ceremony which was officiated by Major Gavin Newsom in San Francisco City Hall. You can watch the video here.

Click photo to play.
In honor of Del and Phyllis, we encourage you to share this wedding video as widely as possible.
I know most of you are unable to join us in person as we pay tribute to Del's legacy, but I know you will all be there with us in spirit.
With love,

Gifts in lieu of flowers can be made to honor Del’s life and commitment and to defeat the California marriage ban through NCLR’s No On 8 PAC at www.nclrights.org/NoOn8.
