French Bistro in Ybor's Latin Quarter
The white linen tables were set, French champagne being poured, array of flowers galore, pillar candles glowing all around the 2 story complex and the French vocals were as lively as being at a French Riviera Bistro. The new Moulin Rouge style themed bistro,  L O'liviers  Restaurant & Cabaret in Ybor City has opened! Among the hundreds of guests that glazed upon the previous  El Centro Español de Tampa building in Ybor City. This was the home of cigar makers lives and the first Mutual Aid Society in Florida. After being abandoned for several years, it was restored and is now part of the Centro Ybor Entertainment Complex. On June 3, 1988, it was designated a U.S. National Historic Landmark.  It is located at 1526-1536 E. Seventh Avenue. So now it is a new type of "Show Time" for the West Coast of Florida! Congratulations to the entrepreneurs undertaking this major feet in this 5000+ s/f space. Olivier Cuevas & Mike Edmondson have also opened near Baywalk  in St. Pete a smaller version of this French eatery called L'Oliviers Bistro. Champagne, Appetizers and Show. Wow... what a way to go. The many acts are well rehearsed with authentic French can can dress and guys in tuxedos. The next ongoing part of the show goes to fire dancers then cladly dressed Vegas showgirls  and the final Amie Demillo & Stephanie Shippae's female illusion drag show experience. All for the price of dinner and drinks. Upcoming events are famed GLBT artists, Night Out with Ru Paul and Leslie Jordan's "Walk the Pink Carpet." Dinner & drinks are priced right too. Grand Opening,  Club Nautical & Cabaret
Two grand openings in one day! WOW it can't get any better in Tampa Bay. Located in St. Petersburg at 4900 66 St N in the former location of Chiq Bar. As we enter the building we were imminently greeted with the warm friendly GLBT hospitality that St. Pete is famous for! It was obvious that this was a team make over! Under the direction of Marliee, Mark S. & Miss Alicia Markstone! With the help of David, Kevin, Rodger, Kevin #2, Ed, Mark M, Kelly, DJ Don, DJ Carol Lopez & more!!! "The Crown Theater," show bar has been all re done with a new bar, new electric swinging curtains & a fresh new attitude. I had to ask about the row of crowns displayed up on top. All the crowns were worn by the actual performers & are fasten down. (Thank Goodness!  You just know some drunken queen would be trying them all on!) As Show Director Miss Alicia Markstone performed, it was clear that this was much, much more than a bar opening. This was the family reunion of the old torn down popular SunCoast Resort. Many of the former employees and guests were in the room! All the warm & love was there without the dark cloud. We give Club Nautical & Cabaret  5 Stars & big thumbs up for filling a void that has been in St. Pete!  We encourage everybody on all three sides of the bay to check it out today!!!!

I know for most of us it goes without saying, but I remind you how important it is to utilize LGBT & LGBT friendly businesses. Just as it was in the beginning of the LGBT movement 40 years ago in 1969 with the Stonewall Riots, Now more than ever we should be reminded of how important supporting our community and our community supporters are. LGBT Businesses are closing at an alarming rate in Tampa Bay, Sarasota and surrounding areas. With out those businesses generating revenue within our community, our voices are substantially diminished. From political power to charitable donations for LGBT organization like AIDS Services of Pinellas County, Metro Charities, Francis House, Winter Pride, St Pete Pride and too many more to mention. The LGBT Community must fight to keep its financial community strong and utilizing LGBT & LGBT friendly businesses is a major way to accomplish that, and if not you than who? Even yesterday when Hillsborough County Commissioners voted down to offer domestic partner benefits or much less to even look at the issue due to the “economy”, This should tell you our economy, the LGBT economy must remain strong and united.

While you and I are all too aware of the effects this economy is having on our community. We may need a little reminder, better yet “A call to arms” to save our LGBT Businesses. When you’re driving down Central Ave in St Pete looking for a place to eat, do you look at Bella Brava or Café Dolce and think its gay owned and operated. In Tampa, do you think it’s not worth the parking issues in GaYBOR to visit Streetcar Charlie’s or MC Film Fest? In Orlando, do you do you get your printing done at DC Graphix or do you go to Kinko’s because its open later? The financial livelihood of our Gay and Lesbian brothers, sisters and supporters rely on you. Relying on your Pink Dollars to help them survive this economic downturn. I remember in the late 80’s when we used to stamp our money with a pink triangle to tell the straight business owners how important our money was to them. Now we need to show our LGBT businesses how important they are to US!

The list of LGBT & LGBT Supportive businesses in St Pete, Tampa, Clearwater, Dunedin and Sarasota are endless, I ask you to keep that in mind next time you head out for dinner, head out to the mall, refinance your mortgage or plan that weekend retreat. Ask yourself, if you’re going to spend your hard earned money anyway, why not make it work for you, in your own community. It does come back in ways you may not directly see. We can not have a “commUnity” with YOU!

There are several organizations where you can find LGBT business listings. Here are just a few.

The clip 4-10 Challenge!!!

January 26, 2009

An Open Letter to the GLBT Community of Tampa Bay, our friends and supporters.

Friends,

This is an unprecedented time in our nation’s history.   The current economic situation is moving our nation and community to a place of financial uncertainty and instability.   As unemployment rates continue to rise, both nationally and locally we all know more and more people who have been directly or indirectly affected by these difficult times.

Our local non-profit groups have enjoyed a decade of support from many regional and national corporate sponsors.   Two years ago when the Real Estate Industry started seeing difficulty in its business, the film festival started to see a decline in corporate and business support on a local level too.  Now we are seeing that same decline and/or discontinuation of financial support on a regional and national level.    During the “boom” times, as corporate support rose, many non-profit groups began to rely less and less on the support of individuals.  It became the default method of doing business that corporate money would continue to flow in support of our organizations.   We are in a new time now and those days of certain corporate support are over.

It is more important than ever before to reach out as an individual and support the non-profit organizations that support and nourish our Tampa Bay Community.  The Clip Film Festival (Tampa International Gay and Lesbian Film Festival) will celebrate its 20th anniversary in October.  St Pete Pride has grown into the largest Pride Celebration in Florida and plans to host the world’s Pride Organizations this year at Interpride.  ASAP, the Metro Center, the Womyn’s Energy Bank, and many other organizations that serve the GLBT community, will see a significant decrease in their funding in 2009.    I wish to challenge our community to step forward and make a clear statement that our GLBT organizations are an important and significant part of the fabric of our community.

Here is the challenge.   Take out your checkbook and write a check for $10.00 (more if you are able) to your four favorite GLBT organizations.  (Friends of the Festival, St Pete Pride, the Metro Center, ASAP, etc…)  If even one–third of the self-identified Tampa Bay GLBTQ population and their allies participate in this challenge, every GLBT organization in Tampa Bay will more than exceed their fund raising expectations for the year.  Only four ten-dollar checks!   Imagine that!

Of course your donation to a 501 ( c) 3 organization is fully tax deductible, but that is not the reason to support this challenge.  Yes, many of our organizations offer “membership benefits” for your financial support, but that is not the reason to support this challenge.  Support because you believe in a diverse and rich community where organizations such as the film festival, Pride, Metro Center, ASAP, and all the others can make a difference in the quality of life for ALL of Tampa Bay’s residents.

We need you.  While I represent Friends of the Festival and the Clip Film Festival, this is a self-initiated campaign for ALL of our gay and lesbian charitable groups.  We are in this together.   WE can send a message that Tampa Bay is a community that supports its own.

As independent organizations, we can send dozens of donor appeals, and membership drive brochures in the mail… we can make donating easy through our organizational websites, but without your support…without getting the attention of OUR community and saying “HELP, WE NEED YOU”, none of that will matter.    It is important.  It is important that we not allow our GLBT culture to falter because we were not willing to sacrifice the equivalent of one cocktail a week for a month to help keep them standing strong.    Here at the film festival, we have over 6,000 names in our database, yet only approximately 150 people actively donate to the organization.   We have an annual attendance of 14,000 at festival events each year… if only those people gave an extra $5.00 a year, we could raise $70,000.  Imagine the power we have as a giving community.  Imagine the message it would send to all of Tampa Bay, our State and the nation if every GLBT organization in our community became fully funded because of direct support from our community.

Search your heart.   I encourage you to accept my challenge and write those 4 checks to your favorite GLBT organizations.  Then I challenge to you tell your friends and family what you’ve done and to encourage them to do the same - This year… and every year.    We get back what we invest in our community.  Please help if you can.

On behalf of the Friends of the Festival Board and Staff, and for all of my colleagues and friends working at Tampa Bay GLBT non-profit organizations, I thank you in advance for your support.   I am proud to call Tampa Bay home.  I am proud to be a member of this community, and I look forward to reporting to you soon that this campaign has been a tremendous success.

All the best,

Stageworks and Gorilla Theatres co produce:

A Body of Water by Lee Blessing
Running February 11th through March 8th

The Play:
A Body of Water is an intriguing look at the power of memory.  What defines who we are?
In this new fascinating, amusing and enigmatic play, Blessing asks who we would be without our memories.  An attractive, middle-aged couple, wake up one morning in an isolated summerhouse above a picturesque body of water. The weather's fine; the view's magnificent; there's only one problem — neither of them can remember who they are.   A third character enters and only adds to the mystery.  Thought-provoking ideas bubble beneath the surface and infuse the play with a unique, humorous, surreal and memorable evening in the theatre.  Part comedy, part mystery, part drama!

The Playwright:
Lee Blessing was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where he grew up in a conventional Midwestern family, in a household where little attention was paid to the arts.  Despite his parents' lack of interest in drama, they were supportive of Blessing's chosen career and always attended his plays.  He wrote his first play while still in high school, and ultimately received his M.A. from the University of Iowa in 1979.   Blessing currently heads the graduate playwriting program at Mason Gross School of the Arts, Rutgers University,

Lee Blessing was nominated for Broadway's 1988 Tony Award as author of Best Play A Walk in the Woods.  In 2006, he won the prestigious Steinberg New Play Award for A Body of Water.  This exciting work was first produced in June 2005 at Minneapolis' Guthrie Theater.  Lee Blessing's other works include Patient A, Thief River, Eleemosynary, Cobb, Two Rooms, Down the Road, Going to St. Ives, and Chesapeake.

A letter to the Hillsborough County Commissioners

Commissioners-

I am a taxpaying citizen of this county.

I have met most all of you. And treated you all with kindness and respect.

I contribute greatly to this County, Community, and to this Country, in many ways.

I go to church here and I believe in God.

I pray for all of you to make the best decisions each day.

I donate to charity and volunteer.

I own a home in the County (not the City) and take great pride in it.

My friends, co-workers and neighbors like me and think I am a decent, hardworking person.

I have won numerous, and national awards for my work.

Why do you not represent me fully along with thousands of others in this county?

I was born a homosexual, a gay person.

It just is what it is.

I have a domestic partner and he is wonderful guy in many of the same ways.

He is also a taxpayer, a father, and a hard worker.

I am very proud of him.

You could be proud of either of us to be your family member.

My family thinks I am real decent guy, as well as my partner, Wayne.

I deserve to be treated fairly and decently and have the same rights as others.

I don't wish you to become gay,

I don't expect you to understand it.

I don't expect you to think it's ok for you or your family.

That is your decision, and not really my business.

So, why do you have to have to make my private life your business?

I do expect to be treated fairly and decently by you, as I treat all of you and those I may not agree with.

The next person that may treat you in the hospital emergency room or at an accident scene may be gay and may save you life, even knowing that you voted to brush them off like they did not exist legally.

They would probably save your life willingly and with excellence.

They may pray for your speedy recovery and for your loved ones and family that may be upset.

Would you, could you do the same?

Or would you vote for laws that restrict partners that have been together for 20,30, 40 years not to see each other in an emergency room as one partner's life is slipping away?

This has happened here in Florida and all over our great multi cultural, multi race, multi lingual country where all are supposed to be treated as equals!

Partners that are not allowed to marry as other countries and states do...so we slog on doing the best we can, with lesser rights...ok... if you have religious problems with marriage... call it something different, so as not to offend folks...domestic partners? Civil unions?

Gay men and women finding someone to share their lives with ....that is what is going on , whether  or not you approve of it.

Each person will have to answer at the end of their life, for their own life, to their God, so why must you interfere and deny their rights and privileges

It is 2009, when, when, are we going to throw off the past with hatred of what we do not know, or cannot fathom?

The longer you keep this community in this backward state of thought , feeling, fear, and action, the longer it will take for us to become known globally as a great City, a great County, a great Region.

Give everyone an equal seat at the table, treat them with respect, disagree if you must , but get on with a government that represents all of us.

That includes this taxpayer and citizen and my partner Wayne.

A partner who I will marry in the eyes of God and my minister here, and in the legal eyes of another State or Country as I am treated in Florida, and Hillsborough County,  like a lesser citizen.

Please reconsider your stance on the domestic partner situation, and on Gay Pride issues and laws affecting all of the thousands of taxpaying Gay County citizens.

And those Commissioners who voted yes, good for you, and thank you!

Matt McGlashen

Laughing Out Loud Comedy Weekend

Sawmill Camping Resort in Dade City (between Tampa & Orlando) present their "Laughing Out Loud Comedy Weekend" 1/30 – 2/1 with Improv Comedy on Friday night and the following fabulous comediennes on Saturday evening:

Judy B. Goode, To quote John Chambrone of the Gazette, "she is a zany, whacky performer who I truly enjoy watching every chance I get.  Part cabaret, this little tsunami is all entertaining".  Judy's impersonations are absolutely hysterical.

Amy Dingler, a former rodeo clown, bull fighter and stunt person who decided to move on to something more risky and switched to stand-up comedy.  Amy is funny, likeable and edgy all at the same time.

Other weekend highlights include Bingo & 50/50 on Friday, DJ Rob's dance hits and remixes in Woody's and DJ Jeff's Crockpot of Country Music in the Courtyard on Friday & Saturday nights, a heated Clothing Optional Pool (weather permitting) drink specials, scrumptious food, and a fabulous SUPERBOWL PARTY on Sunday night.  Buy a drink, receive a square in our "FOR PRIZES" Football Pool"!

CROWBAR ANNOUNCES SUPER BOWL XLIII FESTIVITIES
Ybor City Venue (and top local Steelers hang-out) Hosts Uniquely Eclectic Schedule For The Run-Up To The Big Game

(TAMPA, FL) - CROWBAR, the Ybor City entertainment destination known for providing nightlife fans with everything from high-volume live rock shows to sweaty dance-floor marathons to chilled-out afternoon beer-garden folk, has put together a wholly original array of events for the weekend run-up to Super Bowl XLIII at Tampa's own Raymond James Stadium on Sunday, February 1.

Yes, every club and restaurant in town - particularly those in Ybor City, a district as famous for its after-dark shenanigans as for its rich cultural history - will be throwing its own special nights, one-off attractions and VIP parties. And all kinds of folks will be running around and paying way too much money to wait in line, adhere to ridiculous dress codes, and endure horrible, horrible techno music in the hope of sighting a sports celebrity, or just to say that they were there.

Meanwhile, CROWBAR will be offering the same hip, all-for-fun edge and welcoming, everyone's-invited vibe, as well as some very special nights, sounds and guests, to anyone interested in whooping it up during the week before the Super Bowl AND experiencing some true Tampa Bay hospitality. This is the place to be for Pittsburgh fans & enthusiasts! We can't really tag Crowbar as the "official" bar for Steelers fanatics, but you won't find a better home away from home for Iron City visitors or ex-pats.

The starting lineup:

MONDAY, JANUARY 26
WHAT:
Ybor S.I.N. Service Industry Night
WHEN:
9 p.m.
HOW MUCH: FREE! (18 & up only, please)

It's Ybor's best hospitality night. If you're a 'tender, server, washer, etc., give your feet a break and take advantage of a wide variety of specials. If you're not, buy a hard worker a drink, and you'll learn more about Tampa Bay nightlife - and the people that fuel it - than a solid month of clubbing can teach you. Karaoke by Stormin' Normie.

TUESDAY, JANUARY 27
WHAT:
All Good Tuesdays
WHEN:
9 p.m.
HOW MUCH:
FREE! (18 & up only, please)

The proud tradition of killer Ybor City $5 Liter Nights continues. Big, big drafts and the crazy assortment of hip-hop, funk, rock and dance sounds spun by resident DJs the Soft Rock Renegades make for a weeknight party that almost rivals the weekend. Almost.

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 28
WHAT:
Wax On Wednesdays
WHEN:
9 p.m.
HOW MUCH:
FREE! (18 & up only, please)

DJ Craig provides dance music from the old-school to the cutting edge, specializing in house and drum 'n' bass. Plus, $10 pitchers of your choice of imports. Plus plus, delicious $5 U-Call-It cocktail mayhem. And did we mention yet another nod to the service industry, in the form of dollar-offs? Yeah, the middle of the week just started sucking a whole lot less.

THURSDAY, JANUARY 29
WHAT:
Red Bull Pre-Super Bowl Party Feat. DJ Dummy, DJ Mega
WHEN:
9 p.m.
HOW MUCH:
FREE! (18 & up only, please)

Grind and groove to sets by iconic Chicago MC Common's turntable-spinning cohort Dummy and Tampa's own Mega. Any of Crowbar's deep selection of domestic drafts is just $2 all night long.

FRIDAY, JANUARY 30

WHAT: Reggae Party Feat. Gwan Massive, DJ Blenda
WHEN: 9 p.m.
HOW MUCH: FREE! (18 & up only, please)

Don't blow your opportunity to hear real oceanside style on a whitebread cover band while sipping overpriced blender-spew at some thatched-hut tourist trap. Get out on the dance floor in the dark and sweat to exotic island rhythms both classic and obscure courtesy of the guys from two of Tampa's favorite worldly jam-vibe acts - TRIBAL STYLE and D'VISITORS - in between trips to the bar for $2 Coronas.

SATURDAY, JANUARY 31

WHAT: My So-Called '90s Night
WHEN: 9 p.m.
HOW MUCH: FREE! (18 & up only, please)

Look, the '80s are tired. Let's move on to the decade of grunge, of Lollapalooza, of the emergence of pop as a culture-defining force/farce, of hip-hop's golden age. Uncle Jessie and DJ Hustlehoff deliver all the Clinton Era tunes that you love, love to hate, and hate yourself for loving. Sarcasm! Angst! Good Green Day! Along with $2 domestic pints and $4 Sailor Jerry Rum cocktails.

SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 1

WHAT: Super Bowl XLIII Viewing Party
WHEN: Doors 1 p.m.; Game 6:30 p.m.
HOW MUCH: FREE Entry (18 & up only, please); Call 813-241-8600 for table reservations

Catered barbecue and live acoustic tunes out in the Crow's Nest beer garden lend a better-than-tailgating atmosphere up until the main event, which will be brought to patrons on 2 huge projection screens. CROWBAR offers all of the communal sports-bar vibe and camaraderie - not to mention special personality, tunes and grub - with none of the life-sized cutouts of NASCAR drivers on the walls. And in addition to $3 pints, the bar adds a little top-notch local flavor with $5 glasses of homemade sangria.

CROWBAR is located at 1812 17th Avenue North in Ybor City.
