C AR N I V A L ... GaYBOR Style
Midway rides, bright sunny skies, cotton candy, 50 Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence riding on a ferris wheel, a great stage full of local entertainment, beer gardens, a lot of friends new and old and yes those huge corn dogs (Oooh they came in different shapes too) from the food venders. It was GaYBOR's Southern Exposure Weekend. A full weekend of  fun , shows, and entertainment provided by GaYBOR District Coalition members. A full midway in Czar's parking lot, a stage that had over 30 entertainers providing fun and excitement. Along the streets were venders and Fiesta Day events sponsored by Ybor City Chamber of Commerce. Over 60,000 came to sample the homemade flan, black beans & yellow rice, and just to enjoy a beautiful sunny day in Historic Ybor City. Non profit groups involved with GaYBOR had booths available for them to promote their news events to the many local & out of town visitors. On stage were acts including singer Judy B. Goode & piano playing Paul Thomas, Sax artist Alan Darcy, Crowbar provided a gay up and coming band Lush Progress, Female illusionists Nikki, Erika,Stephanie & Michelle, local singing funster Goefry Goeff, Drag Divas Crystal Waters & Joey Brooks, Can-can dancers from Olivier's Cabaret and so many more talented acts. The MC was Carlos Lopez who did a superb job of keeping the music and festivities flowing with DJ Kaos. Accept for a few glitches all went well on Saturday. Singing Live in concert was singingstar Veronica, but because of some technical problems the concert went from outdoors to inside G.Bar. The weather turned sour on Sunday with the rain & cold northerly winds. All the many events went inside Czar's and Honey Pot for a memorable party time. Geo Vax Labs (scientific testing labs of a new AIDs Viral Vacine) brought in for the weekend show 20 Miss US of A winners from across the United States for " Reach for the Stars" Friend Raising Show. We all hope that you enjoyed a world of fun this past weekend. Because more is coming!

Southern Exposure in Ybor: Such devoted Sisters

March 2, 2009 at 6:21 pm by David Warner

Holy Culture Clash! Ybor City was festival central this past weekend, with Fiesta Day, Flan Fest and Southern Exposure vying for crowds from one end of Ybor to the other. Southern Exposure was the newest of the celebrations, a GaYbor carnival complete with midway, ferris wheel and a visitation from the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, the international sisterhood of white-faced fabulosity. Drag nuns from all over the country were in town to celebrate the Tampa Bay chapter’s official graduation from Mission to Order status; Tampa’s members, like their counterparts all over the world, raise funds for AIDS and gay-related causes while making saintly spectacles of themselves (and assuming hilarious names like Sister Ida Slapter).

On Saturday Creative Loafing talked with visiting and local members of the Sisterhood, and with Tom Keating, head of the Ybor City Chamber of Commerce.

The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence
A huge CONGRATULATIONS goes out to our Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence!!!!!! This past weekend they were elevated from a Mission to a Full Order! The complex process took over 4 years to complete. Sisters from 10 states flew in for the ceremony. Even a founding member from San Francisco, who has been a Sister since 1977, was here! We (Mark & Carrie) received one of the highest honors... and were elevated to Sainthood!  After the ceremony the Good Sisters went right back to community charity work! Assisting with Southern EXPOSURE. The next day hosting "Pink Sunday" at CS & Czar. Later that night helped out at the GeoVax event. To learn more about the Sisters visit  www.flsisters.org

Cabaret ...Cabaret ...Cabareee......tt !!!
The most familiar face in drag appeared in Ybor City at Olivier's Cabaret & Show Bar for 2 sold out nights. Congrats to the new owners, Olivier & Michael and Mgr Ricky.  Ru Paul, famous for her outlandish remarks, music writing & singing and her 6 1/2 ft drag queen stature on Logo TV' Networks new weekly series hit,  "Ru Paul  Drag Races" wowed the over capacity crowds. Not out of the norm for anybody to fonder just a little over the top.  RU gave it her smiling best and over the top display of being a true media Starbooty!

GaYBOR District Pavers In Place
In making up the needs and the direction of any community you have to come up with name recognition. You also have to have a sense of security, passion, and love of your entity. In trying to form the GaYBOR District, one of the minor but major aspects of being a part of the area we are professing was the name recognition. GaYBOR District Coalition name's had its early objectors but the Defenders WON! And so has the name, GaYBOR, a name meaning co-existence! Economically, socially, culturally and politically, Historic Ybor City has positively changed. It is Nationally advertised as a safe GLBT place to visit and enjoy. Yes, first of all a secure safe area. This is needed to make sure certain elements don't hurt any locals, traveling business or visiting tourist clientele. Working with the City of Tampa and the Tampa Police Dept. early in the groups formation identified situations in other GLBT cities. We have working horse patrols aware of the GLBT diverse district working weekends and foot patrols on 8th Ave. where a lot of us walk between bars, shopping and entertainment areas. And it is on those streets we have engraved markers in the sidewalks declaring our existence and home. The beginning pavers just placed all along 7th Ave. and 15th street mark Pride, Community Diversity and Working Together Spirit that had the makings of  the enthusiastic coalitions start. Inclusiveness was and still is a major part of GaYBOR's community plan, make-up and dream. The 30+ special pavers we had made up say;
GaYBOR District
(club, non profit, or individual name)
Year they joined GaYBOR District Coalition.

The street pavers are for sale to anyone, non profit or business at a cost of $80.00 per paver engraved. All forms are available at MC FILM or Ybor City Dev. Corp.. We want to expand to over 100 named pavers by summer!  So when you are on the corner of 7th Ave and 15th Street look at the pavers below your feet.
You are in GaYBOR Country!!!

USF GLBT 5th Annual Spring GALA
On Tuesday March 24, we will hold our 5th annual Spring GALA, beginning at 5:45 p.m. at the USF Alumni Center.  The event is put on each spring as a celebration of campus and community diversity by a consortium of LGBT organizations, including the President's Committee on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity, the USF LGBT Alumni Society, the Student PRIDE Alliance, and the USF Safe Zone Ally program.

The program (see attached PDF) includes a social hour, a special performance by Crescendo: The Tampa Bay Women's Chorus, and our special guest speaker, Betty Castor, Executive Director of the Patel Center for Global Solutions, who will be talking about global diversity initiatives.

We are expecting well over 100 people to attend this free event, and it would be great if you could come.  There will be an ad about the event, with all the details, in the two upcoming issues of Watermark.  You can RSVP (so we can order enough food and beverages) at http://www.usfalumni..net (click on "Events" and "Register for an Event" from the menu on the left), or just call Tyrone Gray at 813-974-1936 (or tgray@admin.usf.edu).  Or just show up!

GULFPORT WOMYN’S FESTIVAL NEWS:

Thanks to all of our volunteers, sponsors, vendors, entertainers, and all you wild womyn who helped make the festival a huge success in 2008. The Board of Directors for the Sonia Plotnick Health Fund has been making plans for our next festival and in light of the current economic issues that all of us are facing, the unbelievable amount of work that goes into each festival, and the difficulty we have had in finding adequate sponsorship due to the poor economy, the Board has decided to set our sights on having an even better festival in 2010.
In fact, we have already chosen the date, so mark March 20, 2010 as the date for the next Gulfport Womyn’s Festival.    gulfportwomynsfestival@yahoo.com

Sleeping Beauty or Coma   This offbeat curtain raiser to Vampire Lesbians of Sodom is a fairytale treatment of "mod" London, 1966. A kooky young girl is discovered by a megalomaniacal fashion designer to be his Top Model. She escapes his clutches and joins forces with a struggling young designer and her photographer boyfriend. The three become the rage of swinging mod London until LSD is slipped to the Model plunging her into a deep coma. Fifteen years later a handsome nutritionist injects the sleeping beauty with mega doses of vitamins awakening her so that as in every fairy tale everyone lives happily ever after……."A compendium of every movie made in the 60's.... Captures their spirit, mood and style with delicious humor."-- N.Y. Nightlife.
Vampire Lesbians of Sodom This truly bizarre entertainment of the Rocky Horror genre is about vamps, has almost nothing to do with lesbians and takes the audience from ancient Sodom where a young “virgin” is sacrificed to the dreaded Succubus, a beautiful vampiress who thrives on the blood of young girls. Through a trick of fate, the girl is transformed into a vampire and plots her revenge. They meet again in Hollywood of the 1920’s and end up in present day Las Vegas. They rekindle their feud until they realize that in this cold modern world, all they really have is each other. Costumes flashier than pinball machines, outrageous lines, awful puns, sinister innocence, harmless depravity - it's all here. One can imagine a cult forming." - N.Y. Times. "Bizarre and wonderful ... If you think Boy George is a gender-bender, well, like Jolson said, you ain't seen nothing yet! Forget your genders, come on, get happy." - Broadway Magazine.

Book by Abe Burrows & Jo Swerling
Music and Lyrics by Frank Loesser
Director: Rocco Morabito
Choreographer: Ronnie DeMarco
Music Director: Emi Stefanov

Winner of the 1951 Tony Award for “Best Musical”, considered by many to be the perfect musical comedy, this romantic comedy soars with the spirit of Broadway as it introduces us to a cast of vivid characters who have become legends: Sarah Brown, the upright but uptight “mission doll”, out to reform the evildoers of Times Square; Sky Masterson, the slick, high-rolling gambler who woos her on a bet and ends up falling in love; Adelaide, the chronically ill nightclub performer whose condition is brought on by the fact she’s been engaged to the same man for 14 years; and Nathan Detroit, her devoted fiancé, desperate as always to find a spot for his infamous floating crap game. Funny and romantic, “Guys And Dolls” is ideal for audiences of any age. Songs include Luck Be a Lady, If I Were a Bell, and I’ll Know.

Hello Mark and Carrie,

Damit I miss you being  closer to St. Pete!  Close at heart will work for now!  I was  reading through your special edition and rememberd that I wanted to send this to you guys for Dishing.. if you have already planned to place this on the site,  just discard!  hug u both big!  Kris
Hi,

Have you heard that Ken Starr -- and the Prop 8 Legal Defense Fund -- filed legal briefs defending the constitutionality of Prop 8 and attempting to forcibly divorce 18,000 same-sex couples that were married in California last year? The Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in this case on March 5, with a decision expected within 90 days.

The Courage Campaign has created a video called "Fidelity," with the permission of musician Regina Spektor, that puts a face to those 18,000 couples and all loving, committed couples seeking full equality under the law.

Please watch this heartbreaking video now. If you have the same reaction that I did, please help me spread the word by sharing it with your friends and family ASAP:

http://www.couragecampaign.org/Divorce

The more people who see this video, the more people will understand the pain caused by Prop 8 and Ken Starr's shameful legal proceeding.

After you watch the video, please join me and over 300,000 people who have signed a letter to the state Supreme Court, asking them to invalidate Prop 8 and reject Starr's case.

Thanks.

This really is awesome.  In reality, big brother can watch our every move!  Orwell must have been from the future.  I'm  still out to lunch on whether this is a good or a bad thing but it's here so it doesn't matter which I choose.  Quite amazing.  You need to play with the signs on the upper left of the picture which will allow you to zoom in close to any individual you choose.  Can't believe this -- the technology is mind-boggling!

This is a photo from the 2009 Inauguration, in which you can see IN FOCUS the face of each individual in the crowd!!  You can scan and zoom to any section of the crowd . . . wait a few seconds . . . and the focus adjusts.

The picture was taken with a robotic camera at 1,474 megapixel (295 times the standard 5 megapixel camera).

Makes you wonder who's watching us right now!  Just click on the website:

Pets' 10 Commandments

1. My life is likely to last 10-15 years.  Any separation from you is likely to be painful.

2. Give me time to understand what you want of me.

3. Place your trust in me.  It is crucial for my well-being.

4. Don't be angry with me for long and don't lock me up as punishment.  You have your work, your friends, your entertainment, but I have only you.

5. Talk to me.  Even if I don't understand your words, I do understand your voice when speaking to me.

6. Be aware that however you treat me, I will never forget it, but I forgive quickly.

7. Before you hit me, before you strike me, remember that I could hurt you, and yet, I choose not to bite you.

8. Before you scold me for being lazy or uncooperative, ask yourself if something might be bothering me.  Perhaps I'm not getting the right food, I have been in the sun too long, or my heart might be getting old or weak.

9. Please take care of me when I grow old.  You too, will grow old.

10. On the ultimate difficult journey, go with me please.  Never say you can't bear to watch.  Don't make me face this alone.  Everything is easier for me if you are there, because I love you so.

~ Take a moment today to be thankful for your pets.  Enjoy and take good care of them.

Life would be a much duller, less joyful experience without God's critters.
