The movie screens are packed with comic book super heroes these days. Maybe this is in part do to the economic times we are all living in now. Fantasy world in a needed fantasy time. Tampa Bay is full of real life Super Heroes! In Ybor City eight of these Super Heroes combined their powers into one truly GLBT Super Force. That force is "The GaYBOR District Coalition" and was dreamt up by visionaries Mark & Carrie, D. Stephen & Steve, Jon & Michael, Tony & Jose. In the short 16 months since combining forces they have brought to, what was empty store fronts, violence & depression in Ybor City, 16 new GLBT businesses have opened, new residents wanting to move into Ybor  & restoring hope & promise to many!!!! Adding to the Super Heroes includes; Streetcar Charlie's, The Whiteroom, Honey Pot, Steam Friday's, Tease Saturdays, Spur's Country Bar, 1701 Leather Room, L' Olivier's Cabaret, Ybor Resort & Spa, The Nest, Ybor Social Club, The Ybor Eagle, Gallery Live, ARTS on Ninth, The Ritz, The Copa (which moved to a larger location in Armenia), 7@14 & The Forge (closed when the building went into foreclosure) & Rehab-Limelight (closed when building was sold). So many non profit organizations, individuals & gay friendly businesses  joined and followed suit. Together, these forces have been beaming out a "Rainbow of Light" of Truth, Honesty, Direction & Diversity in our Community. This light has not gone unnoticed through out, not only Florida, but our GLBT World Community. The GaYBOR District Coalition that started with a dozen community individuals having only a dream and has now grown to 150+ members.

Streetcar Charlie's One Year Anniversary
A night of BRILLIANT INSANITY!!! The VIP party started with everybody meeting on the Terrace at the Waterside Marriott. Then the guest all boarded a Private Trolley Car complete  with a Pink Vodka Bar! When the Trolley car arrived at Streetcar Charlie's the party was so huge it spilled out into the streets! With the crowd cheering her on Melanie Minyon  performed a drag promenade right there in the streets. Next came the fashion show. The streets were packed watching the spectacle. Hot bois walking right down the center strip of the road just like a fashion run way!  Swim wear and underwear included! We can't wait to see how Charlie's tops this next year!

 UK’s Mark Carter named International Mr. Gay Competition

San Francisco – March 10, 2009 – UK police officer, Mark Carter, has been named the current International Mr. Gay titleholder by the Noble Beast Foundation’s Board. In preparation for the Fourth Annual International Mr.. Gay Competition’s Grand Finale, set for Manila in May, the Board moved to replace the previous title holder with Mr. Carter so he can represent the Competition during the May 30, 2009 Awards Gala.

International Mr. Gay Competition’s Founder and Board Chair, Don Spradlin, announced the mid-year appointment as plans for the Fourth Annual IMG moved into their final month of Delegate recruiting. Mr. Spradlin explained that “the original titleholder was unavailable to support the upcoming Grand Finale and that Mr. Carter was the appropriate representative to hand his 2009 sash over to the new title holder during the May 30th Awards Gala.”

The International Grand Finale Weekend includes a series of public events that feature 30 Delegates from all over the world. On Thursday night of May 27, 2009, the organizers have arranged a “Welcome Dinner followed by an organized ”Manila Nightlife Tour” for the 30 visiting Delegates and their traveling companions, The Delegates end their three days of indoor/outdoor contests with on-stage Judge’s Interviews on May 30th. There will also be rehearsals, photo shoots and fund raising events to round out the holiday weekend, which is a benefit for the Noble Beast Foundation.

St Pete Pride Raffle of a 'Smart car'

St. Pete Pride Raffling Smart Car

 (St. Petersburg, FL) -- St Pete Pride and Lokey Motor Company are proud to announce the raffle of a 2009 Smart Car as one of this years Pride events. The odds of winning will vary depending on tickets sold, although no more than 2500 tickets will be sold. St. Pete Pride needs to reach a minimum of 1000 tickets sold to raffle the car. The car is scheduled to be raffled at the Detox T-Dance on Sunday June 28th at 8pm in the parking lot for the Metro Center and Georgie’s Alibi, located at 3100 3rd Avenue North.

The style and package on the car may vary depending on availability but plans currently call for 2009 Smart Fortwo Passion Convertible with the comfort package. The car will likely be red with black trim with the following standard features air conditioning, power windows, locks, mirrors and soft top, also including the premium stereo. The comfort package includes power steering, heated leather seats and fog lights.

IKEA ANNOUNCES ITS TAMPA BAY STORE WILL OPEN MAY 6;
YBOR CITY-AREA LOCATION WILL BE 3RD IN SUNSHINE STATE
TAMPA, FL – IKEA, the world’s leading home furnishings retailer, today
announced that its future Tampa store will open at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, May 6, 2009. It
will be the Swedish company’s 3rd store and restaurant destination in Florida, 6th in the
Southeast, and 37th in the United States. Until the 353,000 square-foot IKEA Tampa
opens, customers can shop at stores in Orlando, FL and Sunrise, FL or at www.IKEAUSA.
com. Other stores in the Southeast are located in Atlanta, GA; Charlotte, NC and
Woodbridge, VA.
“We are thrilled at the excellent construction progress made in the summer and
fall, and believe the remaining construction milestones and interior build-up process will
be complete by May – much earlier than originally envisioned,” noted Monica Varela,
store manager of the future IKEA Tampa. “Now our primary goal is hiring and training
the 400 local hires who will be joining the IKEA coworker family before we open.”
IKEA Tampa will present 10,000 exclusively-designed items, 49 room settings, 3
model home interiors, a supervised children’s play area, and a 350-seat restaurant serving
Swedish specialties such as meatballs with lingonberries or salmon plates, as well as
American dishes. Family-friendly features include a ‘Children’s IKEA’ area in the
showroom, baby care rooms, preferred parking and play areas in the store.
The 353,000-square-foot future IKEA Tampa, with 1,700 parking spaces, will be
built on 29 acres along Adamo Drive at 22nd Street and the Crosstown Expressway, and
will reflect the same unique architectural design for which IKEA stores are known
worldwide.
This new IKEA store created 500 construction jobs and, on May 6, it will welcome
400 new coworkers into the IKEA family of more than 11,000 coworkers across the U.S.
and 120,000 globally. Although IKEA Tampa is progressing through outfitting phases,
prospective coworkers still can apply for diverse positions available in home furnishings
sales, customer service, cashiers, receiving, warehouse and stock replenishment. IKEA
Tampa also offers food service opportunities in its Restaurant, Swedish Foodmarket,
Bistro and staff cafeteria.
There currently are more than 290 IKEA stores in 36 countries, including 36 in the
U.S., where other new stores will open in: Centennial, CO and Somerville, MA. Since its 1943

Film Series presents “I Can’t Think Straight” as March Film Selection.


February 23, 2009  –Tampa, FL – Friends of the Festival is proud to announce the selection of I Can’t Think Straight as its March Film Series Film.   I CAN’T THINK STRAIGHT will screen on Wednesday, March 18th, at the Muvico Baywalk Theatres, in St. Petersburg, FL.    Fans of Lisa Rey and Sheetal Sheth will be thrilled to see the lead actresses reunited after the success of last year’s festival favorite, “The World Unseen.”

In the upper echelons of traditional Middle Eastern society, Reema and Omar prepare for the marriage of their daughter Tala. But back at work in London, Tala encounters Leyla, a young British Indian woman who is dating Tala's best friend Ali. Tala sees something unique in the artless, clumsy, sensitive Leyla who secretly works to become a writer. And Tala's forthright challenges to Leyla's beliefs begins a journey of self-awareness for Leyla. As the women fall in love, Tala's own sense of duty and cultural restraint cause her to pull away from Leyla and fly back to Jordan where the preparations for an ostentatious wedding are well under way. As family members descend and the wedding day approaches, the pressure mounts until Tala finally cracks and extricates herself. Back in London, Leyla is heartbroken but learns to break free of her own self-doubt and her mother's expectations, ditching Ali and being honest with her parents about her sexuality. When Ali and Leyla's feisty sister Zara help throw Tala and Leyla together again, Tala finds that her own preconceptions of what love can be is the final hurdle she must jump to win Leyla back.

USF 5th Annual Spring GALA

Hi Mark and Carrie...I wanted to let you know about an event we have coming up here at USF that you might want to attend, as well as help us spread the word about it.

On Tuesday March 24, we will hold our 5th annual Spring GALA, beginning at 5:45 p.m. at the USF Alumni Center.  The event is put on each spring as a celebration of campus and community diversity by a consortium of LGBT organizations, including the President's Committee on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity, the USF LGBT Alumni Society, the Student PRIDE Alliance, and the USF Safe Zone Ally program.

The program (see attached PDF) includes a social hour, a special performance by Crescendo: The Tampa Bay Women's Chorus, and our special guest speaker, Betty Castor, Executive Director of the Patel Center for Global Solutions, who will be talking about global diversity initiatives.
