Rum Festival
Discount Tickets ON SALE NOW
at MC Film
1

Rum is not for everyone. If you like Pina Coladas, getting caught with a smile, the feel of the ocean, come with us for a while!  Rum lovers are notorious romantics (I know, I’m one!)  Overwhelmingly, rum conjures up images of endless expanses of sandy beaches, ocean breezes & utter relaxation.

Its inglorious history may be shrouded by swashbuckling pillaging ‘Gaspars’, but who doesn’t love Johnny Depp (ahem, Jack Sparrow). Torches & visions of tropical Tiki Gods are ceremoniously making their way back into our rumbrella consciousness. Campy Polynesian retro island escapism rules!

Parlez vous Francais?  J'aime rhum!  The Island of Martinique produces a version called Rhum Agricole, which is made from the juice of gently pressed sugar cane, first developed when there was a shortage of molasses. Then there’s our Braz bro’s. Eu amo o cachaca!  There are purportedly +5,000 cachacas in Brazil— we’re glad to see gems such as Cuca Fresca samba their way into a welcoming American market.  Amo el ron!  Rums hail from Puerto Rico, Mexico, Latin & South America & from Nepal, South Africa, Tanzania, Mauritius & the Philippines.

We have been hosting Rum events annually since 2002 and we’ve tasted rums from mostly every rum producing, sugar cane-growing country.  Never before has there been such a profusion of styles. Here’s a peek at what we’ve tasted.

In recent years, a new revolution has been taking shape in the US—the Rum Revolution.  Dozens of micro-distilleries are dotting the American landscape, producing some of the most outstanding new rums coming to market.

One such example hails from the Island of Tennessee? (yup, that’s what I said)!  Master Distiller (and consummate entertainer) Phil Prichard of Prichards Distillery will be serving up samples of Prichard’s rums at Teatro on Seventh in Ybor City at our Formal Rum Tasting Dinner on Thursday March 26, the opening event of this year’s Polished Palate International Rum Festival. Joining us are award-winning rums Ron Barcelo from the Dominican Republic, Tommy Bahama & Mount Gay, both from Barbados, selections of Rums of Puerto Rico and Diplomatico from Venezuela. These & more will be infused with cuisine specially designed by Chefs Bill Haines & Philip Zeltsar.

Ahoy Mates! No rum celebration is complete without a pirate lurking in the grotto, Gaspar’s Grotto to be precise (link here for St. Pete Times review).  On Friday evening March 27, Rum on the Bar B Q features live entertainment & rummarinated food and drink specialties.  Jose Gaspar, known better by his nickname Gasparilla, was purportedly a Spanish Pirate, the ‘last of the Buccaneers’ and is claimed to have raided the West Coast of Florida during the late 18th century. His legend lives on in the annual celebration bearing his nickname.

The Main Festival Event takes place at The RITZ Ybor on Saturday evening, March 28Taste dozens of rums from around the world, meet our Judges from the Rum Competition, Master Distillers, Authors & Aficionados. While supplies last, VIP guests receive specialty cuisine, goody bags, Imbibe Magazine, stemware courtesy of Rums of Puerto Rico & reserved seminar seating. Seminars will feature all aspects of rum-its history & production-‘How To Taste’ them and how to mix them, including presentations on classic and new cocktails. Our silent auction features product generously donated by participating rums & other items including Davidoff Cigars and the first authentic absinthe available in the US in more than 95 years, Lucid Absinthe Supérieure.

The Hilton Garden Inn in Ybor City is the official Hotel of the Festival. Contact Stephen Hill at 813-769-0137 for info.

The Other War
This is a reminder of the "other war" we are involved in besides AIDS.
     from Wayne

WASHINGTON – The Obama administration recently formally endorsed a U.N. statement calling for the worldwide decriminalization of homosexuality, a measure that former President George W. Bush had refused to sign.

The move was the administration's latest in reversing Bush-era decisions that have been heavily criticized by human rights and other groups.  The United States was the only western nation not to sign onto the declaration when it came up at the U.N. General Assembly in December.

"The United States supports the U.N.'s statement on human rights, sexual orientation and gender identity and is pleased to join the other 66 U.N. member states who have declared their support of the statement," said State Department spokesman Robert Wood.

"The United States is an outspoken defender of human rights and critic of human rights abuses around the world," Wood told reporters.  "As such, we join with other supporters of this statement, and we will continue to remind countries of the importance of respecting the human rights of all people in all appropriate international fora."

The Associated Press reported that the administration would endorse the statement.

Gay rights groups hailed the move.

"The administration's leadership on this issue will be a powerful rebuke of an earlier Bush administration position that sought to deny the universal application of human rights protections to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) individuals," said Mark Bromley of the Council for Global Equality, which promotes equal rights for homosexuals.

"This is long past overdue and we are encouraged by the signal it sends that the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people will now be considered human rights," said Rea Carey, the executive director of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force.

Human rights groups had criticized the Bush administration when it refused to sign the statement when it was presented at the United Nations on Dec. 19. U.S. officials said then that the U.S. opposed discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation but that parts of the declaration raised legal questions that needed further review.

According to negotiators, the Bush team had concerns that those sections could commit the federal government on matters that fall under state jurisdiction. In some states, landlords and private employers are allowed to discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation; on the federal level, gays are not allowed to serve openly in the military.

But Wood said a "careful interagency review" by the Obama administration had concluded that "supporting this statement commits us to no legal obligations."

When it was voted on in December, 66 of the U.N.'s 192 member countries signed the nonbinding declaration, which backers called an historic step to push the General Assembly to deal more forthrightly with anti-gay discrimination.  It was endorsed by all 27 European Union members as well as Japan, Australia and Mexico.

But 70 U.N. members outlaw homosexuality — and in several, homosexual acts can be punished by execution.  More than 50 nations, including members of the Organization of the Islamic Conference, opposed the declaration.

Some Islamic countries said at the time that protecting sexual orientation could lead to "the social normalization and possibly the legalization of deplorable acts" such as pedophilia and incest.  The declaration was also opposed by the Vatican.

St. Pete PRIDE
is Florida’s Biggest and Best Pride Event…AND THIS YEAR THERE ARE MORE REASONS THAN EVER TO INCLUDE YOUR BUSINESS OR ORGANIZATION IN THE COMMEMORATIVE PRIDE PROGRAM.

St Pete Pride is in full swing and ad sales are already above where we were last year at this time. I want to say thank you to everyone that has already booked their ad space in the 2009 St Pete Pride Program. This year as we celebrate the 7th Annual Pride in Paradise Event and the Stonewall Riots mark its 40th anniversary, this is your opportunity to have your business or organization in front of potentially 85,000 attendees of this years 2009 Pride Events and Festival. This 8 X 11 Glossy-Slick magazine has been the talk of the town in years past and complimenting coffee tables throughout Florida. Only once per year is this is this commemorative Pride Program produced and distributed. Making it more than a pride guide, it is a commemorative collector’s item, representing St. Petersburg and all of Florida's LGBT History.

The 2009 St. Pete Pride Program will be created by Watermark, Tampa Bay’s award-winning LGBT newspaper, and a longtime sponsor of St. Pete Pride. With a full-time creative staff, Watermark will introduce sophisticated design elements to the program. Watermark editorial staff will contribute stories and information that will make the program a more readable keepsake, including: a look at what makes St. Petersburg so fabulous; profiles of local residents; a history of gay St. Pete; a guide to local businesses, restaurants and attractions; maps and a complete schedule of events. This is an annual program that is referred to throughout the year. 25,000 programs will be printed and will be available by May 28, 2009, a full four weeks before St. Pete Pride 2009.

The St. Pete Pride Commemorative program will be available at each of Watermark’s more than 400 distributions sites throughout Tampa Bay, as well as Orlando and Sarasota. 8000 copies will be distributed at Disney for Gay Days. Programs will also be available at all St. Pete Pride events leading up to and at the parade and street fair on Saturday, June 28 – expected to draw up to 85,000 people! Your ad in the 2009 St. Pete Pride Program tells gay and gay-friendly readers that you specifically want to do business with them. With a median household income of close to $80,000, the Wall Street Journal has described the LGBT community as “the dream market.” So don’t miss this rare opportunity to target the local LGBT community. Join other advertisers and sponsors, including (list of a dozen or so high-profile advertisers), and be part of the 2009 St. Pete Pride Program.

Russian Gift To The U.S.

I had never heard of this before receiving an e-mail.  Wonder why the  press didn't report it?

This is the "TEAR DROP"  made and installed by the Russians to honor those who died in 9/11 and a statement against terrorism.  It is very impressive.  The tear drop is lined up with the Statue of Liberty.

Gift from the people of Russia . . . "Monument to the struggle against world terrorism, artist Zurab Tsereteli."

. . . it is an impressive memorial and statement against terrorism.

The walkway is made of stones.

Names of the persons killed on 9/11 are inscribed on the base.  The base is like the Vietnam Memorial wall.  It is down in the shipping yards across from "The Lady."
