A True Celebration of Life
Our friend, Rex Maniscalco  had said many times that there were 3 things he wanted at his Celebration of Life.... Cameras & Video rolling, A Pizza to take with him and be sure to only say nice things about him. Because he would be listening!!! Rex got all three wishes and a whole lot more. Rex (Electric Fat Man) was well  known and loved as the Photographer-Historian-Activist-Friend-Son in the Tampa Bay GLBT & Hillsborough Democratic Executive Community and very active in the Hillsborough County GLBTA Democratic caucus www.hcglbtadc.org . So we expected a large crowd and some local politicians but WOW what a turn out!!! 265 people signed the guest book and the crowd was estimated at over 400+. Included in the guests were; Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio, Hillsborough County Clerk of Circuit Court Pat Frank, Hillsborough County Commissioner Kevin Beckner, Tampa City Councilman John Dingfelder, Hillsborough County Commissioner Rose Ferlita & representatives from US Congresswoman Kathy Castor's office. The service was officiated by Rev. Phylis Hunt of the Tampa MCC. Judy B. Goode performed 4 songs including 3 original. A stream of friends spoke about how their lives were enriched by Rex. At the close of the service Rev Phylis Hunt  had everybody take a picture for Rex. 8 pallbearers followed by 100's took Rex to his final resting place where a pizza from Ceasar's of New York was placed with him in his vault. Rev Phylis Hunt gave a moving final prayer. Then Carrie yelled out "AH One-a, AH Two-a, Ah-Cheeze-a" and everybody took one last photo.

A Very Special "Thank You to Everybody for being Rex's Friend." from Aileen Maniscalco, "MOM".

Now, per Rex's last request his final photos.

Say WHAT??!?!!!
To our surprise, Hillsborough County Commissioner Kevin White accepted an invitation to speak at the www.hcglbtadc.org Hillsborough County GLBTA Democratic Caucus's monthly meeting. We truly believe that Comm. White had no idea what GLBTA stood for...  Gay-Lesbian-Bi-Transgender-And Allies!!!! To the shock & disbelief of all in the room... Comm. White said proudly that "the reason I voted NO to domestic partner benefits in Hillsborough County was it would cost too much money!"  Comm. White went on to say that he was not prejudice. He lives in Seminole Heights where gay people live too. He has gay neighbors and he (QUOTE) said, "I have even had YOU PEOPLE in my House!"  When asked, "What would have happened if the same rationality was applied to women or blacks like you?" White's answer was "Times were different then." When asked why he did not conform to the National Democratic Party Platform regarding nondiscrimination toward the GLBT community. White did a little side step number. White was then surprised to learn that Hillsborough County is on the blackball list of  do not visit communities by HRC ( Human Rights Campaign was explained to him). White had no idea GLBT Tourism dollars could help the community and even add jobs instead of loosing jobs. This was the high point of the meeting. HCGLBT&A Chairwoman Sally Phillips asked the room, "Who was straight in the room." 1/2 of the attendees raised their hands! This shows our diversity in Hillsborough County. From here the meeting went down hill for the next 1/2 hour as White dug himself into a deep hole. Mr White with all due respect. How did you get into office???  If your so concerned about saving money in Hillsborough County,  maybe you should start by not wearing such expensive suits!!!!

A Band of Wind and a Midwest Blast
This week a Midwest state broke the coastal barrier of GLBT major rights and issues. The Iowa State Supreme Court unanimously ruled and announced that " the Iowa Gay Marriage Ban was Unconstitutional." The court reaffirmed that a statute inconsistent with the Iowa constitution must be declared void even though it may be supported by strong and deep-seated traditional beliefs and popular opinion," said a summary of the ruling issued by the court. In its decision, the court upholds a 2007 Polk County District Court judge's ruling that the law violates the Iowa Constitution. It strikes the language from Iowa code limiting marriage to between a man a woman. After a three week period the ruling could be determined as ruled by the justices.
Now let us see what happens in Utah!

High Drama at "Dishing with Mark & Carrie"
OMG!!!........ the Dishing press came to a screaming hault this week!!! All day our dog Miss Amber had been acting strangely. Wanting to stray and not staying near us? Then Mark was at the computer typing away. When out of the corner of his eye he saw something strange. Next to him on his desk was a bag of doggie treats and trying to get into the bag was a POSSUM! No it wasn't Dame Edna! You can just imagine how Mark screamed like a little girl and took off!!!  Miss Amber starting barking, Carrie jumped up and the possum jumped off the desk and ran into the backroom. The little guy hid in the garbage can. Carrie put the lid on the can and took him outside to set him free. Mark is still stuck to the ceiling!!!!

From the Kitchen of Mark & Carrie
Last week I was going thru an old cook book and came across an old favorite recipe for Asian Fried Pork Chops that is excellent.

In the morning before going to work pound your pork chops with the rough side of a mallet. In a zip lock bag combine 2 T each water, soy sauce, cornstarch. 1/2 T sherry, 1 teaspoon each salt, sugar, white vinegar, 2 cloves chopped garlic, 1 egg. Add the chops to the bag and place in the ref. That night dredge the cops thru seasoned flour and fry with a little oil about 2 minute each side. Remove to paper towels.  Add one half can of drained mandarin oranges, julienne pepers to a salad and Asian dressing. For desert a slice of melon. POOF! a Fab dinner in minutes.  The next day the cold chops are great too!  Just chop them then add to salad. There you have lunch too.

Enjoy!

Hello GaYbor Friends,

I have wonderful news.   Just last night we got approval to add a second screening of Breakfast with Scot at the Muvico Centro Ybor on April 22nd.

Due to the really great response to this film, and thanks to our good friends at HereTV and Muvico Centro Ybor we're now screening Breakfast with Scot at 7:30pm AND at 9:30pm on Wednesday, April 22nd.

Come see the film that opened the 2008 Miami Gay and Lesbian Film Festival! Breakfast with Scot is a wonderful film about family and what it means to be a unique individual in a world of conformity.  This film is rated PG-13, so invited your friends with teenage children, your parents, and friends.  I guarantee you will LOVE this film!

Spread the word GaYbor Coalition!  Let's pack two screenings on one night and show our support for GLBT Film in Ybor City!

JASON ISBELL & 400 UNIT PLAY YBOR CITY
Singer-Songwriter and Band Return to Crowbar

WHAT:
Jason Isbell & 400 Unit, Red Cortez
WHEN: Wednesday, May 6, 8 p.m.
WHERE: Crowbar, Ybor City
HOW MUCH: $12 advance/$14 day of show Buy Tickets Here!

(TAMPA, FL) - Critically acclaimed songwriter-guitarist Jason Isbell and his backing band 400 Unit are headed back to Ybor City for another show at live-music hotbed Crowbar on May 6.

Isbell, who achieved notoriety as a member of iconic alternative Southern rock outfit Drive-By Truckers before striking out as a solo artist, has long been a favorite with Tampa Bay fans of all stripes, from all-ages punk audiences to old-school country & western aficionados. His soulful, unadorned twang-rock strikes chords across the musical spectrum; Isbell's 2007 solo debut Sirens of the Ditch was highly praised, and the brand-new eponymously titled follow-up is poised to follow in its predecessor's esteemed wake.

On his last Tampa stop in 2008, Isbell took the time to chat and play a few acoustic tunes on WMNF 88.5 FM DJ Scott Imrich's Saturday Asylum show before he and 400 Unit turned in a scorching Crowbar performance as part of homegrown music-and-culture magazine REAX's weekend-long second-anniversary party. Now, preferred show dealer THX MGMT brings the group back for another beery round at the same top-notch venue.

Tour support for the concert comes in the form of evocative California rock combo Red Cortez.

Crowbar is located at 1812 East 17th Street in Ybor City.
18 & up only, please.
