IKEA is Coming TO Town
Florida's largest Swedish retail home store, IKEA  is opening its doors in Historic Ybor City Wednesday, May 6th. What a selection mix of 'put it together light kits', kitchen spoons, Swedish Meatballs to fine cotton linens for your feather bed. HMMMM what a comparison! The 353,000 s/f complete home design facility has its blue & yellow colors eyed on the Tampa Bay area shoppers. It is a destination in sorts. The store includes 3 full model home interiors for your imagination to grow upon. Over 10,000 items to choose from for the creative and trendy homewares. The Swedish restaurant will seat over 350 people with a full service menu of unique Scandinavian foods. We were at the VIP Opening with none other than members of the Tampa City Council, St. Pete City Council, Hillsborough County Board of Commissioners, and array of public officials and business owners taking in the new attraction and moneymaker for the community. To our surprise a full luncheon of the Swedish Flavors was provided with a hosts of new to the area tastes to the historic Latin Ybor City culture. Store personnel and  managers were introduced and IKEA knows how to put on a Grand Opening show. They are estimating over 120,000 visitors the first week. Campers are already on sight to be the first to get into the store and receive special promotional gifts opening day. The "no purchase look only private preview" had us oogling at a lot of colorful neat things. But, I had Mark put them all away until the stores checkouts were open! Located right on Adamo Drive and 22nd Ave in Historic Ybor City. And stop by and say hi to us up the street at MC FILM.

Only at MC Film
This week a very nice Grandmother came into our store. She told us that her grandson goes to High School with a Gay guy that shops at our store. Her grandson was to shy to come into our store but liked the Gay guys shirts bought here. We told her that we have been getting new shirts in every week. So the Grandmother described the style and purchased several styles for her grandson.  WOW how times have changed.

is Florida’s Biggest and Best Pride Event…AND THIS YEAR THERE ARE MORE REASONS THAN EVER TO INCLUDE YOUR BUSINESS OR ORGANIZATION IN THE COMMEMORATIVE PRIDE PROGRAM.

St Pete Pride is in full swing and ad sales are already above where we were last year at this time. I want to say thank you to everyone that has already booked their ad space in the 2009 St Pete Pride Program. This year as we celebrate the 7th Annual Pride in Paradise Event and the Stonewall Riots mark its 40th anniversary, this is your opportunity to have your business or organization in front of potentially 85,000 attendees of this years 2009 Pride Events and Festival. This 8 X 11 Glossy-Slick magazine has been the talk of the town in years past and complimenting coffee tables throughout Florida. Only once per year is this is this commemorative Pride Program produced and distributed. Making it more than a pride guide, it is a commemorative collector’s item, representing St. Petersburg and all of Florida's LGBT History.

The 2009 St. Pete Pride Program will be created by Watermark, Tampa Bay’s award-winning LGBT newspaper, and a longtime sponsor of St. Pete Pride. With a full-time creative staff, Watermark will introduce sophisticated design elements to the program. Watermark editorial staff will contribute stories and information that will make the program a more readable keepsake, including: a look at what makes St. Petersburg so fabulous; profiles of local residents; a history of gay St. Pete; a guide to local businesses, restaurants and attractions; maps and a complete schedule of events. This is an annual program that is referred to throughout the year. 25,000 programs will be printed and will be available by May 28, 2009, a full four weeks before St. Pete Pride 2009.

The St. Pete Pride Commemorative program will be available at each of Watermark’s more than 400 distributions sites throughout Tampa Bay, as well as Orlando and Sarasota. 8000 copies will be distributed at Disney for Gay Days. Programs will also be available at all St. Pete Pride events leading up to and at the parade and street fair on Saturday, June 28 – expected to draw up to 85,000 people! Your ad in the 2009 St. Pete Pride Program tells gay and gay-friendly readers that you specifically want to do business with them. With a median household income of close to $80,000, the Wall Street Journal has described the LGBT community as “the dream market.” So don’t miss this rare opportunity to target the local LGBT community. Join other advertisers and sponsors, including (list of a dozen or so high-profile advertisers), and be part of the 2009 St. Pete Pride Program.

WHEN: Saturday, May 9 at 10am. Callbacks are Saturday May 9 at 12noon. Call 813-892-5095 for an appointment. Singers with no appointment will be seen throughout the day as time permits.

PAID: YES

SCHEDULE: Rehearsals begin Friday, May 29th. Show opens Thursday, June 18 for 4 weeks with a possible 2 week extension.

BRING: Headshot and Resume, 16 bars of a Contemporary Musical Comedy Song and 16 Bars of a Pop Song. You may be asked for one or both selections. All Actors must be willing to perform the entire 90-minute show in a Bathtowel. THERE IS NO NUDITY IN THE SHOW, though you will be asked to remove your shirt at auditions.

SEEKING: 4 Male Actors to fill the following roles-

Billy. Age 18-21. Any body type, should be smooth-chested. Tenor, with a clear High B-Flat. Naive. Young. Innocent. Inexperienced. Awkward. Unsure. Introverted. Curious. Virginal. Idealistic. Sincere. Vulnerable.

Maurice. Age Early 30's to Mid-40's. Medium-build. Depending on casting for other characters, he should appear the oldest. Pop-Baritone to a High A-flat. Should have a killer Maurice Chevalier impression (Think Lumiere in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast) for Bathhouse ABC’s. . Billy’s foil. On the surface: Charming, Insincere, Smarmy, Manipulative, Aggressive, Self-serving. Inside: vulnerable, lonely, longing for his past, for his lost love. Though not necessarily the most attractive Bathhouse member, he should exude a sexual magnetism unparalleled by the rest of the cast. Witty. Everyone knows Maurice at the Baths and looks up to him, which is why he can’t show his inner pain.

Teddy. Age 21-25. Twink, lean, swimmer’s build. Little to no chest hair. Should appear at least relatively Billy’s age. Tenor to a B-flat (Falsetto C). Sweet, good-natured, cute, excitable. Boyish. He was in Billy’s position not too long ago. Has gained the wisdom that Billy learns throughout the show. Loves his hairy men. Must have the ability to make the audience fall in love with his wide-eyed innocence. Think Barnaby in Hello, Dolly!

David. Age 28-40. Bari-tenor. Pop Baritone with high G’s. Should be able to riff and have a strong pop falsetto. Hot, Ripped, Muscular. Named after the Michelangelo statue of the same name for his impeccable physique. Though David serves as eye-candy for the entire Bathhouse population, we learn that he is in fact lonely, since others are actually intimidated by his looks. We also learn, that he trapped and is a slave to his body now. We find and get hints throughout the show that he might have interest in Billy. His passion for working out stems from the insecurities of being formerly overweight.

A Letter from Daphne

Hi there-
As many of you have already realized I am going to be competing at The National Entertainer of the Year contest again this year (www.eoy.net).

I placed 11th overall last year and missed the top ten by about 30 points.

I honestly believe that this sytem is where I belong and I look forward to showing everyone what I have planned. With pageants come tons of expenses. I am sure you can all imagine. I will be responsible for bringing a sizable group of folks with me this year and must pay for transportation, food, lodging, tickets, and everything else you can think of. I estimate that my total cost is over 6k.

If you are interested in sponsoring me outright (for any amount) please let me know. I appreciate any and all amounts and have a paypal account if need be. I am willing to perform, do makeup, host, judge, MC, or whatever you may need in exchange for monitary sponsorship.

If you are an entertainer and have done a National Pageant before you know what I am talking about. I hope that I have the support of all of the area entertainers, as I have supported many of you on your quests previously.

I will be having two benefit shows. I decided to do two shows so that there were to locations for you all to choose from. If you are willing and able to perform at one of the benefit shows listed below, please let me know.....

Sunday June 14th- Stilettos Showbar or TBD Location in the Greater New Port Richey- Dunedin area. open to location suggestions...8pm

Monday July 6th- The Pulse- Lakeland- 8pm with a special TALENT # featuring Jarrod.
:)

I am open to fund raising ideas and would love to hear about anything you may suggest (that's fairly legal and within reason) :)

I love you all and hope to represent FL at EOY with Pride and a Great Package this year...
XOXOXO
Daphne/Michael

From Queer Mass Bike Ride

Hello! My name is Seven Mitchell. We talked about the Queer bike ride that I organize.
Basically our goal is to strengthen the queer community through positive biking demonstrations. Critical Mass bike rides happen all over the country, and the world, as a form of peaceful demonstration and protest. Bikers gather in large numbers and ride through the streets of the city as a collective mass, forcing cars, for once, to yield to other forms of transportation, and, hopefully, raising awareness for non-motorists on the roads. The rides are always safety oriented. Riders are encouraged to wear helmets and comply with the bike light laws. The pace is slow/comfortable and well within the capability of even the most novice rider. Our route is not always pre-determined; we work as a collective, and, technically, critical masses are leader-less rides, at least that's what we tell the cops if they happen to ask ;).
Our first Queer Mass was the first of its kind in Tampa history, and it was a great success by my standards. We has just over 30 riders who participated, and everyone returned safely. We started at the Tampa Bay Bike Co-op on Armenia and Waters. Our route took us down Florida, left on 7th ave., through Ybor, Channelside, downtown, and back up Florida with some of us continuing to Bo's Ice Cream while others returned to the Co-op. This month we will meet downtown in the Lykes Gaslight Park. It is our hope that this more central starting point will be both easier to find, and offer quicker access to the more exciting, more populated parts of the city without the long trecks up and down Florida.
We are hoping to have another successful gathering on May 17th (Sunday). We will begin to gather around 6:30p.m. with hopes of leaving around 7; I say hopes, and I know you know what it is like functioning on queer time. :).
I have been riding in the biking (fixed gear specifically) community in Tampa for almost two years now, and I have found the community extremely open and welcoming. I have never felt threatened based on my sexuality. However, even though they are very welcoming, I have noticed a severe lack of queer riders. I hope that these queer masses offer an entrée into the biking community for those queers who may be leery of stepping out of their comfort zones. I find bike riding extremely rewarding! And, it is a healthy alternative to socializing in Smokey bars! :)
Attached is a flyer for the next Queer Mass and pictures of the queer flag made specifically for the ride. It is our believe that a traditional rainbow flag may alienate those who do not readily identify with its connontations. Therefore we are very careful to call this a 'queer' ride rather than a gay ride, or a LGBT ride. We want to cast as wide a net as possible so that nobody is left out. About 1/3 of the riders on the last queer mass were straight allies. Ultimately we determine our success as such: if nobody experiences a moment's hesitation in deciding to participate, than it is a success. :)
Thank you so much for your time and interest! We would certainly appreciate any help you could offer as far as spreading the word. It is my hope that a weekly ride also develops once a core of queer riders show dedication and interest in forming a community. And, hopefully, our band of queer riders can centralize and become an institution within the larger biking community, offering assistance in planning and executing rides and races and earning a permanent place, much like the group of girl riders known as 'The Skirts.'
:) Thanks again! :)

7th Annual

Night of Alternative Theatre - Out At The Golden Apple

presents

"SORDID LIVES"

Get ready for laughs the size of Texas when  the Suncoast AIDS Theatre Project’s 7th Annual Night of Alternative Theatre, Out at the Golden Apple,  presents SORDID LIVES, Monday, May 11, 2009

Del Shores comedy SORDID LIVES  is a twisted white trash tale that puts the "fun" in "dysfunctional" The hilariously sordid details about a southern  family surface with a vengeance when relatives converge for the funeral of "Grandma Peggy" who died tripping over her lover's wooden legs. Toss in a couple of feuding daughters, crazy, cross-dressing "Brother Boy", a jumpy aunt that can't quit smoking, a  strip-tease hostage situation of the men folk by two stoned and scorned Sisters in-laws, and a funeral reception that will leave you in stiches. An outrageous night of comedy and laughter. Warning:  This quirky 90-minute romp contains sexual innuendo and mature subject matter.  Gasp!

SORDID LIVES will feature Joey Panek, Kyle Ennis Turoff, Samantha Barrett, Ben Turoff , Berry Ayers, Charles McKenzie, Toph McRae, Alyssa Goudy and others. All contributing their time and talent for this worthy cause.

Proceeds from the SATP event benefit PWA programs at Trinity Charities and the Michael Boch Health Center of Manatee,  organizations that provide services to people living with HIV and AIDS.

Queer Black Cinema

Presents

Looking for Langston

A black and white, fantasy-like recreation of high-society gay men during the Harlem Renaissance, with archival footage and photographs intercut with a story. A wake is going on, with mourners gathered around a coffin. Downstairs is an elegant bar where tuxedoed men dance and talk. One of them has a dream in which he comes upon Beauty, who seems to reject him, although when he awakes, Beauty is sleeping beside him. His story and his visits to the jazz and dance club are framed by voices reading from the poetry and essays of Hughes and others. The text is rarely explicit, but the freedom of gay Black men in the 1920s in Harlem is suggested and celebrated visually

ART EVENTS TRAVEL ANNOUNCES ADVENTURES CUSTOM-DESIGNED FOR THE GAY AND LESBIAN COMMUNITY…AND THEIR FRIENDS

Orlando, FL -- Art Events Travel proudly presents Birds of a Feather Tours, culturally-themed trips custom-designed for gay and lesbian travelers and their friends, hosted by Scottie Campbell. The inaugural journey will be to London, October 20-26, and will benefit the Orlando Youth Alliance.

For more than 10 years, Art Events Travel has been taking groups on unparalleled culturally-centered leisure trips to destinations throughout the world. Over that time, the globe-trotting company has gained a reputation for creating intimate custom-designed trips with itineraries that focus on the history, culture, and arts of the cities they visit.

Russ and Margaret Mary Russell, the husband and wife team who own and operate Art Events Travel, discovered through friends that there is a need in the gay community for the culturally-based excursions they create. The two approached local writer and theatre

favorite Scottie Campbell with the idea.

“I jumped at the opportunity to host the trips,” says Campbell. “More often than not, travel companies catering to a gay audience will mainly focus on a party atmosphere -- which is great. With ‘Birds of a Feather Tours’ we’re going to have a good time, but discover and learn while we do it.”

October’s London trip will include visits to favorite sights: The London Eye, Westminster Abbey, St. Paul’s Cathedral, Tower of London, Shakespeare’s Globe, and Middle Temple and Temple Church. Museums visits are included to the British Museum, Victoria & Albert Museum, and the National Gallery. Tickets for the West End production of Priscilla Queen of the Desert: the musical and a club evening are also included. There will also be walking tours and ample time for shopping at such places as Harrod’s and Covent Garden. Price of the trip includes round-trip airfare from Orlando, group ground transportation in London, accommodations at the four-star Novotel Tower Bridge, and breakfast each morning at the hotel.  Air from other cities is available upon request.  The trip is escorted by Art Events Travel.

Art Events Travel launches Birds of a Feather Tours with a trip to London, October 20-26, 2009. Price of the trip is $2695 per person double occupancy and $3395 for single

occupancy. Travelers making their initial payment by May 15 will receive a $200 discount. The trip will benefit the Orlando Youth Alliance. To book your trip or for further information call 407.895.1301,  e-mail info@ArtEventsTravel.com or visit ArtEventsTravel.com.

On the evening of March 31st, 2009, Tim Tevebaugh was driving home from work east of Craigmont in the southern Idaho Panhandle.

Across the rolling hay fields, Tim saw a very usual phenomena.  The snow rollers that he took pictures of are extremely rare because of the unique combination of snow, wind, temperature and moisture needed to create them.  They form with light but sticky snow and strong (but not too strong) winds. These snow rollers formed during the day as they weren't present in the morning on Tim's drive to work.
